Made in Abyss renewed for season 2

The announcement about the second season came in May through the series’ official Twitter account.

The title for the second season, according to series music composer Kevin Penkin, is “The Sun Blazes Upon the Golden City.” This confirms that season 2 is a direct sequel to the 2020 anime film “Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul.” It will be based on the original manga by author Akihito Tsukushi.

How many ‘Made in Abyss’ Manga Volumes’ are there?

The manga, written by Akihito Tsukushi, has been published regularly since its debut in 2012. There are currently nine volumes, with the latest volume published on March 30, 2021. The series is ongoing, with four chapters released on Web Comic Gamma, yet to be collected into a 10th volume.

Season one and the movie “Dawn of the Deep Soul” covered the first five volumes and some parts of volume six of the manga series. The second season would cover the remaining volumes.

Unfortunately, the makers have not released many details about the second season. We only know that the upcoming season will be a direct sequel to the movie and it will be adapted from the original manga. Ar the time of writing this, we don’t have much information about the studio that is animating the second season.

Kinema Citrus, which animated the first season and all three films, most recently worked on the second season of The Rising of the Shield Hero and Cardfight!! Vanguard overDress. Kinema has co-animated these two series, so, it is possible that it is also working on the second season of Made in Abyss.

Apart from the second season, an action role-playing game by Spike Chunsoft will release for consoles and PC in 2022. Helmed by Kevin McMullin, a live-action film is also in production.

Made in Abyss Season 2 Plot

This fantasy anime has a unique plot. There is an enormous pit called the “Abyss”, where strange and wonderful creations reside. Abyss is full of precious relics, called Artifacts, that current humans are unable to make.

The mysteries of the Abyss capture humans and they want to explore it. The adventurers who drive into pit are known as “Delvers”. A little orphan girl named Riko lives in the town of Orth on the edge of the Abyss. She wants to become a Delver like her mother and solve the mysteries of the pit.

One fine day, Riko starts exploring the caves and finds a robot that resembles a human. Fascinated by the mysteries of the Abyss, Riko and her new friend dive into the undiscovered region to unhitch its mysteries. What lies ahead for them in the darkness forms the rest of the story?

As mentioned above, the events of the second season take place after Season 1 and the feature film, “Dawn of the Deep Soul.” The anime will continue to adapt the manga and would start from some part of Volume 6 picking the next level of the Abyss – the sixth layer.
