Tokyo Ravens Season 2

Why there is no Tokyo Ravens Season 2 yet? Read on to know about its possibility, probable release date, cast, plot, and other details.

Tokyo Ravens is a Japanese fantasy-style action anime based on the Japanese light novel series of the same name. The first season comprised of 24 episodes started airing in Japan on Oct 9, 2013. The last episode of the first season aired on Mar 26, 2014.

The first season received a positive response and since then the fans are wondering why there is no sequel yet. Well, fans have tried their best to convince the studio with several online petitions and social media posts. However, Studio Eight Bit has refrained from talking about the sequel. Are there any hopes for the Tokyo Ravens sequel? Will we ever get Tokyo Ravens Season 2?

For animes, the possibility of a sequel depends on several factors like the source material, popularity, and demand of the sequel. We have analyzed these factors for Tokyo Ravens Season 2. Based on our research, here is what we feel about the possibility of Tokyo Ravens Season 2. Let’s discuss all these factors in detail:

1) Do We Have Enough Source Material For Tokyo Ravens Season 2?

Almost every anime series use existing source material which usually is manga, light novel, or mobile game.

For Tokyo Ravens, the source material is the light novel series of the same name. Written by Kōhei Azano and illustrated by Sumihei, the first volume was published in May 2010.

Next, we will check, how many light novels volumes have been released. Is the story coming to an end? If the story is ending, there is a little possibility of continuation like what happened to Air Gear Season 2.

The next thing we need to check is how many light novels have been adapted in making the first season of Tokyo Ravens. Maybe there isn’t enough source material or novels left to make a sequel like what happened to No Game No Life Season 2.

How many Tokyo Ravens light novels have been released?

To date, 16 light novel volumes of Tokyo Ravens have been released. The first was released on May 20, 2010, and the latest volume was released on Oct 20, 2018. There is also a Manga series with six volumes, the last one got published in Feb 2014.

The first season of the Tokyo Ravens anime series adapted volumes 1-9 of its light novel series. This is way more than an average anime season covers. So, 7 out of 16 light novel volumes are available for adaptation. It means that the second season of Tokyo Ravens would start with volume 10 of the light novel series.

With seven novel series available, the anime makers have enough source material to begin Tokyo ravens season 2. The first season used too much source material. Makers can a short season of 12 to 15 episodes covering these 7 volumes.

2) Tokyo Ravens Season 2: Sales & Profit Information

The possibility of another season of an anime series depends on the profitability as well as the sales of its source material, Blu-ray copies, merchandise, and viewership on OTT platforms. Most anime series lose money or take years to recover investment and make profit.

Generally, anime sequels witness a drop of around 20% in profit. However, anything above it is a reason to worry and may refrain makers from continuing the franchise. Now let’s have a look at the sales and profit information of Tokyo Ravens.

Tokyo Ravens Blu-ray sales

The first season was released on eight disks in Japan. The average sales per volume were around 2200 copies. It is an average number, not too good but not too bad as well.

However, Blu-ray is a thing of the past now and most of the viewers have switched to digital and streaming platforms.

Tokyo Ravens Light novel sales

Tokyo Ravens hasn’t performed too well when it comes to sales of light novels. Volume 15 released in 2017, sold around 16,000 copies. The latest volume 16, has sold over 20,000 copies only. The light novel sales are less than Overlord, Noragami but better than Wise Man’s Grandchild.

If a novel series gets sale fewer than 20000 copies then the chances of its sequel are low. There are famous franchises like Accel World with an average volume sale of 50K+ copies still waiting for season 2.

Tokyo Ravens Manga, Merchandise, Figurines sales

Even the Manga series of Tokyo Ravens haven’t performed well. The last two volumes sold less than 1 lakh copies. Moreover, the last Manga volume was released in 2014, a long time back.

There are no figurines available for Tokyo Ravens. So, it didn’t make any money from the figures. Coming to merchandise, around 40 items are available which is way less. A strong anime has around 200 to 300 pieces of merchandise. Tokyo Ravens may not be making any money from merchandise either.

Other than these sources, Tokyo Ravens also makes a profit from the international license for Crunchyroll, streaming on Crunchyroll, Funimation, and other platforms, collaboration with advertisers, and other collaborations. But these sales are also much far than satisfactory.

Tokyo Ravens franchise is definitely not performing well. The light novel and manga sales are below the mark. The franchise make almost zero money from merchandise and figurines.

3) Buzz and hype for Tokyo Ravens Season 2

In deciding the destiny of an anime series, the most important is to have a look at its buzz and hype. In most of the cases, sequels are less popular than the first season. There are occasions when there is no buzz or hype for another season. This generally happens when the first season turns out intolerable.

We analyze various sources such as the official website, social media, and google trends to predict the fate of the franchise. Coming to Tokyo Ravens, the hype and buzz is not there.

It seems that the first season was produced solely to promote the light novel series. Well, the plan has backfired as despite being a decent anime, the first season failed to boost the novel and manga sales. Now, the possibility of getting an anime sequel depends on the profit through various mediums.

Tokyo Ravens was well received by the viewers in Japan. Following its international release, the popularity and viewership increased. On Animelist, Tokyo Ravens has a score of 7.49 (180K+ votes) which is decent. The fans are still waiting for a seuqel. In the last five years, fans have tried their best to convince the studio with several online petitions and social media posts.

It seems that the studio have no plan to carry forward the anime franchise. It’s been more than six years and there is no announcement on season 2 yet. The official website for Tokyo Ravens is not available now.

On anime and manga platforms, these is a decent buzz for Tokyo Ravens anime sequel. But as the years are passing, the buzz and demand is dipping.

Will There Be Tokyo Ravens Season 2?

Considering all the above factors, I can say that there will be no Tokyo Ravens season 2. The problem here is the profitability. Not onlt anime, but the source material sales i.e. light novel sales have seen downward trend in the last couple of years. The first season Blu-ray sales were also poor. Season 1 failed to make much money from streaming.

Tokyo Ravens has no chance to come up with a sequel unless digital giant like Netflix pick it up for production. This is bad news for fans waiting for Tokyo Ravens season 2.
