Why there is no Overlord Season 4 yet? What is the possibility of the fourth season? What is the probable release date?
Overlord is a Japanese anime based on the Japanese Dark Fantasy novel series of the same name. The first season comprising of 13 episodes premiered on September 29, 2015. It was followed by two more seasons of 13 episodes each. The third season ended on October 2, 2018, and since then the fans are waiting for Overlord season 4.
Fans are wondering why there is no sequel so far, and will we ever get Overlord season 4? In the next season, we will know if Ainz manages to conquer Yggdrasil’s whole world, or someone stops him.
For animes, the possibility of a sequel depends on several factors. We have analyzed several factors. Based on our search, here is what we feel about the possibility of Overlord season 4. Let’s discuss all major factors in detail:
1) Do We Have Enough Source Material For Overlord Season 4?
Almost every anime series use existing source material which usually is Manga, light novel, or mobile game.
For Overlord, the source material is the light novel of the same name.
In order to affirm whether there will be more anime seasons, we need to check, how many light novels did the writer release so far. Is the story coming to an end? If the story is ending, there is a little possibility of continuation like what happened to Air Gear Season 2.

The next thing we need to check is how many light novels have been covered in making the first three seasons of the Overlord. Maybe there isn’t enough source material or novels left to make a sequel like what happened to No Game No Life Season 2.
How many volumes of Overlord light novel has been released?
Till date, 14 light novel volumes of Overlord have been released in Japan. The latest volume released on March 12, 2020. Kugane Maruyama wrote one volume in 2017, 2018, and none in 2019. He is planning to finish Overlord with 17th volume.
The anime series Overlord has adapted three light novels each season. So, 9 out of 14 released light novel volumes have already been covered for the anime adaptation by Madhouse. It means that Overlord season 4 would start with volume 10 of the novel series.
2) Overlord Season 4: Sales & Profit Information
The future of anime series depends on the profitability as well as the sales of the source material, Blu-ray copies, merchandise, viewership on OTT platforms.
We already had three seasons to an anime series, so there is no denying that it is a profitable venture for the makers. Whether there will be Overlord season 4 or not, depends on how well the last two seasons performed.
While a drop of around 20% in profit for a sequel is acceptable, anything above it is a reason to worry and may refrain makers from continuing the franchise. If there is a significant drop, it could mean the series is no longer profitable, like in the case of Noragami Season 3.
Overlord Blu-ray sales
Now coming to Blu-ray sales of Overlord, the first season sold a massive 12,500 copies per volume. The second season dropped to 7,000 copies, and the third one was about 6,500 copies per volume. However, Blu-ray is a thing of past now and most of the viewers have switched to digital and OTT platforms. Still, 6500 copies post is a very good number. Most series struggle to sell even 2,000 per disk in 2020.
Overlord Light novel sales
Each volume of Overlord saw the sale of more than 200,000 copies. This is just an incredible number considering the other competing novels. Overlord is the second best selling light novel per volume just behind Sword Art Online. Each volume sells more than 200,000 copies.
Overlord games sales
A mobile game for Overlord called Mass For The Dead is available in Japan and the USA. It is performing well with more than 500,000 Dollars revenue worldwide in March 2020. These are pretty good numbers.
Other than these sources, Overlord also makes a decent profit from the international license for Crunchyroll, streaming on Crunchyroll, Funimation, and other platforms, collaboration with advertisers, manga sales, and other collaborations.
3) Buzz and hype for Overlord Season 4
It is one of the most important factors in deciding the fate of the anime franchise. In most of the cases, sequels are less popular than the first season.
There are occasions when there is no buzz or hype for another season. This generally happens when the first season turns out unendurable. That’s what happened to Tokyo Ravens and why there is no Tokyo Ravens Season 2.
Coming to Overlord, there is certainly a big demand like One Punch Man Season 3. Every month around 115K users are searching for the fourth season of the anime series. The demand for the third season was also very good as it had twice as many searches as the first season that aired in 2015. This is a very good sign. Leave aside anime, the light novel series is really popular despite the release speed is a little slow.
Overlord season 4: What the makers are saying?
During AnimagiC 2019 in Germany, Kugane Maruyama, so-bin, and Overlord anime scriptwriter Yukie Sugawara were guests of honor. During the Overlord panel, the fourth season of the anime series was discussed. While Maruyama had no comment, Sugawara told convention attendees that it was “extremely likely” that the fourth season would be produced in the future.
Will There Be Overlord Season 4?
Considering all the above points, there is no denying that Overlord season 4 will happen very soon. The series has everything in its favor be it sales, hype or buzz, popularity, or the source material.
Some unverified reports claim that season 4 is already in production, however, I would wait for an official announcement. I am expecting the announcement to be made pretty soon. Expect Overlord Season 4 to release either January or July 2021. In the worst case, it will get pushed to 2022.
