The final volume of the novel series was published on December 22, 2011. Before the novel series reached its climax, a manga series illustrated by Satoru Sao was released in July 2011.

The official plot synopsis reads, “A gate appears in Tokyo’s Ginza district in the 21st century. Will there be Gate Season 3?

It has been more than 5 years ever since we saw the group together. A-1 Pictures neither confirmed Gate season 3 nor did it announced anything about it. It’s very unlikely that the series will continue for another season after such a long time. However, one must never lose hope. There are many anime series that returned even after a decade and emerged as big hits. There’s enough source material left and we guess that Gate season 3 will be on cards. It’s just a matter of time that we get an official statement.

When will the third season release?

As for the release date of Gate Season 3, we can’t assert anything at the moment. There’s not even a confirmation on the series renewal and in that case assuming anything would be fruitless. Still, we would not keep you guys down. So here is our prediction.

Hoping that the anime gets a renewal in 2021, we can get new episodes in late 2022 or early 2023. Besides, A-1 Pictures, the studio which produced the first two seasons, is quite busy with other projects. Sword Art Online is currently under production and it’s possible that the studio work on Gaate season 3 later.

What storyline will Gate Season 3 follow?

The first two seasons of the anime series were quite promising. Gate Season 2 climaxed with a satisfactory ending so it’s unlikely that season 3 would continue from thereon. Therefore, Gate season 3 would adapt the Gate: Weigh Anchor arc of the light novel series. It sets four years after the gate was closed. As the gate reopens, the government sends the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Forces rather than the general forces. The novels depict that there is also a portal that opens and leads to the Xenomorph homeworld. We have to see whether the production and the director make it that adventurous.

Characters and voice actors

Nothing certain can be said for the cast of Gate season 3 either. But isn’t it obvious that almost all the characters will return in the third season? If that so, then the production wouldn’t compromise their voices. Hence, the previous voice actors will also return to give the very essence to all the characters. So below we have jotted down the list of all the main characters along with their Japanese and English voice actors.

  • Yoji Itami: Junichi Suwabe (Japanese) and David Wald (English)
