Yona of the Dawn (“Akatsuki no Yona”) is an anime based on the manga of the same name by Mizuho Kusanagi. The first season of the shoujo anime comprising 24 episodes ran from October 7, 2014 – March 24, 2015. It was followed by three original video animation specials (OVAs) released in 2015 and 2016. OVA 3 titled The Yellow Dragon Zeno’s Past, Part 2: A Red Star Rises released on Dec 19, 2016, and since then there is no update on the future of the anime series. Fans are questioning why there is the studio Pierrot hasn’t announced the Yona of The Dawn Season 3 yet. Will we ever get episodes of the shoujo anime? Here’s everything you need to know.
Is there enough source material available?
Yona of The Dawn anime is based on the manga of the same name written and illustrated by Mizuho Kusanagi. The manga was first published in 2009, and since then a total of thirty-six volumes have been released with the latest being published on Aug 19, 2021. Season 1 used the first eight volumes of the manga series.
Talking about OVAs, they cover the backstories of Kija, the Hakuryuu (white dragon), and Zeno, the Ouryuu (yellow dragon). While the first OVA adapted from the 12th volume, the second and third OVAs adapt the manga’s “Zeno Arc” from volume 18 of the manga.
So, in total around 10 volumes of the manga series have been adapted. The manga is still going and at the time of writing 26 volumes are available for screen adaptation. This is more than enough source material to go ahead with at least two more seasons of the anime series.
Why there is no Yona of the Dawn Season 2 yet?
Well, it’s difficult to say as the first season was a big hit. The anime has a pretty good rating on myanimelist. Even after seven years, there is still a lot of interest in Akatsuki No Yona Season 2. Every month thousands of fans search for the latest updates on the second season on search engines.
One possible reason for the anime not being renewed is that the second season failed to make enough profit. As per the site Anime Next Season, the Blu-Ray sales for the second season were not up to the mark. The manga sales are dropping too. Thus, Yona of The Dawn is not a profitable project for the studio despite its massive popularity.
Will there be ‘Yona of the Dawn’ Season 2?
There is no word yet on a future second season for “Yona of the Dawn.” Well, it’s not unusual for anime series to have long hiatuses between seasons, the problem here is no updates at all. Studio Pierrot has literally made no updates in the last five years which put a big question mark on the future of the anime series.
The last reliable update came in 2016 when Mizuho Kusanagi, the creator of the manga series, announced on Twitter that she had been badly affected by the Kumamoto earthquakes, which struck the Kyushu region in Japan in April 2016. However, Kusanagi returned back to work and the manga series is being published at a good pace.
As per the trend, the longer the time between seasons, the lower the chances of approval. Having said that ‘Yona of The Dawn’ still has a decent chance of renewal thanks to its popularity and the ample source material.

Yona of the Dawn release date
There is no official update on the release date. Even if the anime gets a renewal today, it would still take around a year for it to be on our TV screens. I am hoping for the second season to be announced by the end of this year. In case Yona of the Dawn is not renewed by the end of 2021, there could be big question marks on its future.
‘Yona of The Dawn’ Season 2 Plot
The plot of “Yona of the Dawn” Season 2 is expected to follow that of the manga. The first season adapted the manga’s first eight volumes, while the OVA covered all covered volumes 12 and 18. If renewed, the second season will start with Volume 9.
Zeno, the Yellow Dragon, joins Yona’s party. Now, the Four Dragons reunite battle against Su-Won and his allies and save the kingdom. The people in the land of the Fire Tribe are dealing with heavy taxes and hunger. What actions will Yona and her friends take to protect the town from Su-Won. Volume 9 of the manga also has flashbacks to the childhood days of Yona, Su-Won, and Hak.
