It’s a world inhabited by huldufólk, or mythical beings like giants, trolls, and elves.

The series debuted on Netflix back in September 2018. Since then, we’ve seen the release of two seasons, followed by a movie, initially believed to be the conclusion but now proving not to be. Titled “Hilda and the Mountain King,” the movie, launched on New Year’s Eve 2021, depicted Hilda awakening in a troll’s body. Her quest involved discovering how to regain her human form and rescue the city of Trolberg.

Fans are already looking forward to a third season and to the delight of fans, the show has been renewed for a third and final season. Yes, this will be the final season. So, are you up for one last adventure? Want to know when it will be released? What will it be about? To find out, continue reading.

When will Hilda Season 3 Premiere?

Good news for fans!! The release date of Hilda season 3 isn’t too far. Hilda Season 3 will arrive on Netflix globally on December 7, 2023. According to a report from Deadline, the first two episodes, which Bella Ramsey is the voice of, will have their premiere at the Ottawa International Animation Festival. The third season will feature eight episodes, including a 70-minute special.

What will Hilda Season 3 be about?

We don’t know much about what will happen in the third season. However, we are aware that the main focus of the show is Hilda, a little kid who lived in a small cottage with her mother Johanna in the late 1980s and early 1990s, not far from the walled city of Trolberg, on the margins of a forest.

Luke Pearson, the author of Hilda, confirmed several key details about the upcoming third and final season, in an interview with Animation Magazine:

“Season three will move on from the events of the movie and venture into some new territory. Although there will be some detours, it’s a more focused, ongoing story than we’ve told previously, which is exciting. It will sadly be the final season, but I’m excited for people to see what we’ve got in store — especially since we’re beyond the books, so it’s all a surprise. I’d say it’s less about checking in on what we’ve seen before, and more about exploring aspects of Hilda’s world that have gone unspoken until now.”

Pearson has also Tweeted that Hilda will be visibly older in the new season in response to criticism that the show is moving the story forward.

Ahead of its Netflix release, the new season was previewed at the Ottowa International Animation Festival on September 21, 2023.

Here’s the synopsis of the final season:

“Hilda returns, eager to escape the bustling city of Trolberg for a refresh. She embarks on a train with Mum, Frida, David and of course her bold sense of adventure. In Tofoten, Hilda is encouraged to lean into the soft living of this sleepy town by her quirky Great Aunt Astrid – walks by the river, delicious baking, local shopping. But this quiet lifestyle is quickly interrupted when Hilda gets a whiff of something mysterious nearby: a Fairy Mound! Her curiosity leads to more than just an adventure and a new creature-y friend… But to an eerie landscape where danger lurks in the shadows. The third season will uncover truths never explored before in the series!”
