Watchmen Season 2: Release Date, Plot, Cast and Latest Updates [2022]
Watchmen Season 2

Will there be a second season of HBO’s super hit TV series Watchmen? Here is everything we know about Watchmen season 2.

  • Damon Lindelof concluded Watchmen as a self-contained story. He left his role as showrunner after the first season.
  • HBO hasn’t renewed the series yet. Lead actress Regina King said that she would only return for the next instalment if Damon Lindelof returns as showrunner.

Watchmen is an American superhero drama TV series based on the 1986 DC Comics series of the same title. While the comic series was created by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, Damon Lindelof adapted it to TV series. He also served as an executive producer and writer. The first season of Watchmen aired on HBO from October 20, 2019, to Dec 15, 2019.

Watchmen won 11 Emmy Awards

Watchmen received widespread critical acclaim and favourable audience reactions. With an IMDB rating of 8.1/10, this series has received good reviews from fans. HBO is reported to have received the highest viewership for the series. Watchmen received the highest number of nominations at the 72nd Emmy awards. With 26 Emmy Award nominations and 11 wins, including Best Limited Series, King for Best Actress for a Limited Series, and Abdul-Mateen for Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series; the most for any show in 2020.

While the fans await Watchmen Season 2, Lindelof left as showrunner after the first season, stating that he had concluded his intended story. It’s unlikely that Watchmen will return for a second season. In early 2020, USA Today reported that HBO programming chief Casey Bloys said HBO is only interested in another instalment if creator Damon Lindelof is too — and he’s not.

Considering the popularity of the series, HBO will probably want to continue it. As Watchmen Season 2 seems like a far-fetched dream at this point, there is still a possibility that it could happen.

If Watchmen returns, what would be the plot of Season 2?

It has been more than two years since Watchmen Season 1 came to an exciting, unexpected, and unsettling end. Creator Lindelof from his side has completed Watchmen as a self-contained story. Unfortunately due to this, even HBO is not very inclined to renew the series. However, there are still some unanswered questions from fans which raises the question of the second season. It’s still possible that a follow-up could come in and if that were the case, it’s all open to speculation on what Season 2 might look like.

In season 1, viewers saw the adventures of Angela and her journey from a police officer working in the Tulsa Police Department to becoming a Tulsa Police Detective. Viewers also saw how she lands herself in the plot to kidnap Doctor Manhattan.

In the second season, the creators may explore the storyline in Season 1 on whether Angela inherited Doctor Manhattan’s powers or not. Season 2 can bring more of Angela’s involvement as superhuman. If she did not end up inheriting his powers, we might see the loss of Doctor Manhattan. There were also some references of Dan after he went to prison which could have some chance for him to make an appearance.

Watchmen Season 2 Cast

Fans would definitely love to see Regina King, Don Johnson, Jeremy Irons, and the other cast members return and continue their journey. However as the creators have mentioned this as a self-contained story, there is a possibility that the next season could have many new faces with a different story. However, there is no official confirmation for HBO.

Regina King has said on multiple occasions that she would only return for season 2 if Damon Lindelof returns as showrunner.

Watchmen Season 2 Release Date

Though Lindelof does not intend to go ahead with the next season, there is always a hope of a new creator who can take the show forward. Lindelof is open to the idea of someone picking up where he left.

While accepting one of the awards, Damon Lindelof had this to say about how much the show meant to him. He said that he was okay if someone wanted to take over moving forward (via Deadline):

“Watchmen is something I’ve loved since I was 13 years old. Someone else created it, and this was my run on it. I’ve invited any other artist who wants to take the baton.”

However, finding somebody who can write and create the next season of Watchmen to the level Lindelof delivered to the audience is not an easy task. In addition, the ongoing pandemic situation has delayed this process even further.

So, any decision related to Watchmen season two has to be considered cautiously by HBO. With the next season being a distant hope, fans need to wait and watch this space for more updates related to the Watchmen series.
