Will there be season 2 of The Old Man?

Well, the good news for the fans is that FX Network has already renewed The Old Man. FX renewed the show on June 27, 2022, even before the first season concluded on July 21, 2022. The premiere of The Old Man was the most-watched cable series premiere since January 2021, as per Deadline.

“The stellar cast led by Jeff Bridges, John Lithgow, Amy Brenneman and Alia Shawkat is really connecting with audiences and we are excited to get to work on season 2 with our colleagues at 20th Television and this fantastic team,” said Eric Schrier, FX Entertainment president.

Latest Updates on The Old Man Season 2

Well, we have got some bad news for fans waiting for the second season. The Old Man season 2 was affected by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike. WGA strike began on May 2, 2023. The SAG-AFTRA strike started on July 14, 2023. Since the show was renewed back in 2022, scripts and filming had already begun on the second season.

As per Deadline, production for The Old Man season 2 began as there had already been five scripts completed before the strike forced a stop to the writing. The plan was for all five scripts to be filmed, but it was decided production would be halted following the filming of episode 4 as the fifth episode needed rewrites.

Even though the Hollywood strikes have since been resolved, there have been no further updates regarding the production of The Old Man season 2.

The Old Man Season 2 Release Date

Now, the big question is when are we getting The Old Man season 2. Well, there is no official information yet. However, based on the first season’s release, we were expecting the second season to premiere in the summer of 2023.

The second season of The Old Man has faced its own setbacks. In July 2023, filming of the show was stopped because of the writer’s strike and not having enough scripts ready to film. The second season’s release date depends entirely on when the filming resumes.

Well, one thing is sure, we aren’t getting the second season in early 2024. Our prediction is that the filming might resume sometime in early 2024. So, we hope to see the second season of The Old Man in the second half of 2024, at the earliest.

The Old Man Season 1 Recap

Spoilers Alert

The spy thriller introduced Jeff Bridges in the role of the former CIA member Dan Chase. Chase is seen living in upstate New York for thirty years quite in peace unless something contrasting happens in his life.

The former CIA member had killed an intruder who broke into his home. Post which Chase has been living off-the-grid. He rents a room from Zoe McDonald, with whom he is forced to partner while on the run.

FBI Assistant Director for Counterintelligence Harold Harper is tasked to bring in Chase, because of their complicated past during the Soviet–Afghan War. Harper has a team that includes his protege, trusted protege Angela Adams (Alia Shawkat), and young CIA agent Raymond Waters (EJ Bonilla). His team also has Julian Carson, an assassin (Gbenga Akinnagbe), recommended to Harper by the shadowy power player Morgan Bote (Joel Grey).

Who will star in The Old Man Season 2?

With no major additions to the cast being announced, all the major characters who survived the first season should be back for the second season. So, we expect the following members to return for the second season:

  • Jeff Bridges as Dan Chase
  • John Lithgow as Harold Harper
  • Alia Shawkat as Angela Adams
  • Navid Negahban as Faraz Hamzad
  • Gbenga Akinnagbe as Julian Carson
  • Joel Grey as Morgan Bote
  • Amy Brenneman as Zoe McDonald

It is still unknown if Bill Heck, Leem Lubany, Pej Vahdat, and Christopher Redman — who played the younger versions of Chase, Abbey Chase, Hamzad, and Harper — are going to be back. The show may bring back these characters through flashbacks.

The Old Man Season 2 Plot

The first season of The Old Man was just the beginning of the story for all the potential characters, especially Chase and Hamzad. Meanwhile, Harper is the key character in the series too. However, the second season will move in the direction to let the viewers know how Harper will deal with Chase.

One of the cliffhangers left in season 1 was certainly Hamzad meeting his long-lost daughter Emily. Thus, it would be interesting to see how they reconcile with each other and if any other twist awaits in the second season or not.

In an interview with The Wrap, ci-creator John Steinberg said: “It’s a story that is really about these guys confronting their mortality, especially in the case of Dan Chase. He’s a person who has dodged mortality and felt immune to it in some respect to get through all of the things he’s gotten through. Now it’s about what happens when you can’t dodge it anymore and your body is failing you and you’re living alone and your children are grown.

“He feels like it’s over and it led to a conversation about what I think is conventionally referred to as a three-quarter life crisis. You are conditioned to feel like when you hit a certain age, you’re done.”

He added: “The idea that I think a lot of people crash into unexpectedly is that they have time left. And I think the more the conversation about legacy became real, the more of this secret door into potentially something else that’s totally unexplored becomes important.”

Is there any trailer for The Old Man season 2?

With no release date finalized for The Old Man season 2, we can’t expect to have a trailer anytime soon. Though certainly a few months before the release of the second season of the spy thriller we are likely to get the trailer.

Is The Old Man series closely following The Old Man novel by Thomas Perry?

The Old Man series has taken its basic story from the novel of the same name by Thomas Perry. However, one who has gone through the novel and the first season of FX’s series can easily spot the difference between the duo’s storylines.

Not only some characters’ names but even the plot and connection behind them have been changed in the series. Be it Emily who is working with Harper and is the daughter of Hamzad. In the novel, she has no connection with Hamzad (Called Hamzah in the novel).

Similarly, the reason for Hamzad running behind Chase in the series is different. As in the novel, Chase took $20 million from Hamzah and that made the latter run after him. The story between them in the series though is different as there Chase ran away from Hamzad during the Soviet-Afghan war. Thus one cannot bet on whether the series will follow the novel closely, especially towards the end of it.
