Since its debut in 2018, Yellowstone has emerged as one of the biggest shows on TV. Viewers and fans can’t get enough of his Western Ranch drama. In fact, it is the most-watched cable series on TV. As per Deadline, the season 5 premiere brought in nearly 16 million viewers, making it the most-watched show on TV for all of 2022 and the most-watched cable premiere since “The Walking Dead” in 2017.

Yellowstone Season 5 premiered on Nov 13, 2022, and went on a mid-season break after eight episodes. The second part of the fifth season is set to premiere in November 2024 with no confirmed release date as of yet. Though there are months left before season 5 concludes, fans have already started anticipating Yellowstone Season 6. So, what are the latest updates on the sixth season of the western drama? Here’s everything you need to know.

Will There Be Yellowstone Season 6?

The fifth season of Yellowstone debuted in November 2022. Eight episodes were aired in the first part. The show went on hiatus with plans for returning sometime in summer 2023. However, those plans reportedly fizzled out due to Costner’s limited availability. The WAG strike further delayed the production and the second part of the fifth season will now be released in November 2024.

In February Deadline reported that the show could be ending soon, saying that the series would wrap up and be replaced by a new spin-off show starring Matthew McConaughey. Per the publication, the root of the issue was a disagreement with Yellowstone star Kevin Costner over the series’s shooting schedule, however, Costner’s attorney Marty Singer denied the claims.

“The idea that Kevin was only willing to work one week on the second half of Season 5 of Yellowstone is an absolute lie,” Singer told Puck News. “It’s ridiculous—and anyone suggesting it shouldn’t be believed for one second.” He added, “As everyone who knows anything about Kevin is well aware, he is incredibly passionate about the show and has always gone way above and beyond to ensure its success.”

Yellowstone Season 6 Cancelled

Well, all those rumors actually turned out true. Yellowstone Season 6 has been canceled. Despite being a huge success and the latest season gathering record-breaking viewership, the Paramount drama will not be returning for the sixth season.

After months of rumors and speculations, Paramount announced that Yellowstone is ending with season five.

In May 2023, Paramount finally confirmed that Yellowstone will end with the second half of season five. The final six episodes of the fifth season will begin airing in November 2024. The channel hasn’t announced if Costner will be a part of it. The filming is expected to begin in the summer of 2024.

Why Isn’t Yellowstone Getting a Season 6?

Season 6 of Yellowstone won’t happen due to a disagreement between Costner and the creator Taylor Sheridan. Before the cancellation, there were intentions to divide Season 5 into two parts, but Costner didn’t align with this plan. The division impacted the time he could dedicate to his own project, Horizon: An American Saga. He had previously asked for reduced screen time in the first part, yet this wasn’t feasible given that Costner’s character John Dutton serves as the show’s primary lead.

Later on, it was disclosed that Costner did express interest in returning for Season 6. Discussions between him and the show revolved around his contract and salary. However, those negotiations eventually faltered during his divorce proceedings; People reported that the actor stated, “I couldn’t help them [Yellowstone] any more. We tried to negotiate, they offered me less money than previous seasons, there were issues with the creative… we came up with a number, and they walked away.”

Amidst all this drama, SAG-AFTRA and WGA went on strike, so even if Costner and the show’s team reached an agreement, the strikes that endured through most of the summer of 2023 hindered any possibility of producing, writing, or filming the show.

It’s still unclear if Costner will appear in any episodes. Yet, there’s an indication that he might make a brief appearance to conclude Dutton’s storyline. His contract includes a moral clause ensuring that his character can’t be written off in a manner he doesn’t endorse. Sheridan affirmed that he wouldn’t subject any of his characters to an unfavorable fate.

“I’m disappointed. It truncates the closure of his character. It doesn’t alter it, but it truncates it…”I don’t do f***-you car crashes,” Sheridan told The Hollywood Reporter.

Paramount announces new series as Yellowstone replacement

While Yellowstone won’t see a sixth reason, members of the Dutton family will return in a new series. Paramount Network has also ordered a modern-day sequel series. The new series will stream on Paramount+, joining the other shows in the Yellowstone franchise like 1923, 1883, and more.
