Yellowstone spin-off ‘1923’ will have new episodes, but it may be a while before it comes back.

1923 is a prequel to the Paramount Network series, Yellowstone and serves as a sequel to the series 1883. The Taylor Sheridan show starring Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford, “explores the early twentieth century when pandemics, historic drought, and the end of Prohibition all plague the Mountain West. When the show debuted in December last year, viewers were quickly captivated by a fresh ensemble of Duttons.
Viewers witnessed the great efforts of Jacob (Harrison Ford) and Cara Dutton (Helen Mirren) as they worked to preserve the Montana lands that had originally belonged to Jacob’s brother, James (played by Tim McGraw in 1883). Furthermore, they witnessed the couple confronting their personal challenges, including the ominous presence of the Great Depression.
Viewers also witnessed Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) falling in love with Alexandra (Julia Schlaepfer) on opposite sides of the globe. Regrettably, their romance was short-lived, but it seems like this may not be the final chapter in their story
Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone Universe continues to expand. What started with one show following the dramas of the modern-day Dutton family on their Montana ranch, now has two prequels already in 1883 and 1923. Another spin-off 6666 is already in the works.
As 1923 gets renewed for a second season which is going to be its final season, here’s everything we know so far about the show’s upcoming season.
Season 2 will be the final season
On February 3, Paramount+ announced that 1923 got renewed for season 2. According to Variety, the latest Yellowstone spin-off became “the most-watched Paramount+ premiere of all time in the U.S. with 7.4 million viewers.”
Although there’s no official confirmation that season 2 will serve as the ultimate season, actor Brandon Sklenar appeared to hold a different perspective. During a Q&A session with the 1923 cast, hosted by The Hollywood Reporter in May, he subtly suggested that all the narrative threads would be resolved by the conclusion of season 2.
“It’s [a] bookend,” he said during the virtual event. “[The series is] still limited, but I think of it as one piece — there’s just a split in the middle, but it’s all one piece. It will conclude.”
Harrison will return for the second season
The former Star Wars, Indiana Jones actor, Harrison Ford has confirmed that he can’t wait to get back in the saddle (literally) over at Dutton Ranch. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ford spoke about his filming schedule and excitement to join the crew for the second season.
Speaking about his shows, 1923 and Shrinking (Apple TV+), Ford said, “[Shrinking] came along, and then, very quickly after that, 1923 came along. I took the job without a script on both of them, on faith that the people who created the projects were going to deliver me a good script. I really didn’t realize how much work 1923 was going to be, and I absolutely feel it’s worth it. I’m excited to do another season of both.”
Ford explained, “The simplest answer is probably the most truthful: After two years of sitting on my ass during Covid-19, and waiting quite a few years for Indiana Jones to start, I had not done as much work as I wanted to and I wanted to do different things.”

1923 Season 2 Plot
At the moment, all possible storylines for the second season of 1923 remain undisclosed. Nevertheless, considering the way the first season concluded, there might be some hints regarding potential developments.
As viewers may recall, the final episode of Season 1 concluded with a showdown between Hank (Michael Greyeyes) and Teonna Rainwater (Aminah Nieves). Although Teonna survived the altercation, it remains uncertain whether she succeeded in evading her pursuers after escaping from her boarding school.
As for Spencer (Brendan Sklenar) and Alex (Julia Schlaepfer), their romance took a tragic turn when they encountered Alex’s former fiancé while on a voyage. This encounter led to a duel between Spencer and the ex-fiancé, resulting in the latter’s demise. Although the two appeared to part ways at the end of the season, the upcoming installment is expected to explore their separate journeys to Yellowstone, with the hope of a future reunion.
For now, it’s best to say that the show will continue to explore the social challenges of the early 20th century, and how that impacts the lives of the people of the time. More can be said only when we receive a trailer for the Season 2 of the show.
Has 1923 season 2 started filming?
There’s no official update on when 1923 season 2 will start filming. In a June report from Deadline, it was revealed that production is “delayed indefinitely” due to the WGA writers’ strike that began on May 2, 2023, and finally ended on Sep 27, 2023.
According to NBC Montana, during a conversation with Bill Melvin on June 8, the manager of the Butte Civic Center, it was disclosed that production had originally been scheduled to resume in the city of Butte on June 5. Additionally, the show is providing the town whopping $75,000 per month for the use of the Civic Center until the end of the year. Although the Paramount+ series has submitted requests for an extension of their contract with the city, he expressed optimism that everything will proceed as planned once the strike concludes.
“We are going to follow the contract as we have it. That’s all we can do,” he said in another interview.
As per KXLF, Butte will its contract with the ‘1923’ television series. They will no longer be using the Butte Civic Center as a sound stage and it’s likely the series will no longer be filmed in Butte. The reasons behind this decision are tied to the prolonged delays the show has been experiencing.
Though the WGA writers’ strike ended on Sep 27, there is no update on when 1923 will start filming. We expect the production to start soon, probably by the end of this year or early 2024.
Is there a 1923 Season 2 release date?
1923 Season 2 was officially confirmed in February 2023, as reported by Deadline. However, no release date has been announced for the second season. At present, Season 2 doesn’t have an official release date, and there might be a significant wait before its debut, as production has been hampered by both the writers’ strike and the SAG-AFTRA strike.
Prior to the strikes, predictions suggested it could arrive on screens in late 2023 if not 2024. Now that the WAG strike has ended, we can make a prediction about the second season’s premiere date based on the production timetable for the first season.
The filming of the first season of the series officially started in August 2022. Season 1 premiered in Dec 2022. That’s a rapid turnaround.
If the actors get back to work in early 2024, we can expect to see 1923 Season 2 premiere in July or August 2024. So hopefully the wait won’t be too long.
However, we should be well aware that Sheridan currently is handling a lot of Yellowstone shows including Yellowstone, 6666 and original shows like Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, and Lioness. So, a lot depends on his schedule.

On Rotten Tomatoes, 1923 holds a 90% approval rating with an average rating of 7.2/10, based on 39 reviews by critics. The website’s consensus states, “Distinguished by the ineffable star power of Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, 1923 is another solid if unrelentingly grim addition to Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone universe.”
On Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, the series has received a score of 67 out of 100 based on 15 critic reviews, indicating “generally favourable reviews.”
1923 was an instant hit and it became the most-watched Paramount+ premiere of all time in the U.S. with 7.4 million viewers. It also received positive reviews, with Variety critic Joshua Alston writing that “Mirren and Ford – both 80-ish, neither a stranger to action badassery – make for such a potent pairing, their chemistry alone is enough to make ‘1923’ feel like an elevated version of Sheridan’s neo-Western fare.”
