The CW has canceled The Vampire Diaries spin-off Legacies after four seasons. This marks the end of the Vampire Diaries franchise’s 13-year run on The CW.

The CW has canceled The Vampire Diaries spin-off Legacies after four seasons. Legacies‘ season finale scheduled to air on June 16 will serve as the series finale. Well, this isn’t only the end of the series, it also marks the end of the Vampire Diaries franchise’s 13-year run on The CW. Legacies is the second spin-off series in the franchise following The Originals, which aired from October 2013 to August 2018.

Legacies started airing on the network in October 2015 and pick up the story from its prequel The Originals. It follows the story of Hope Mikaelson (Danielle Rose Russell), daughter of vampire/werewolf hybrid Klaus Mikaelson (Joseph Morgan) and werewolf Hayley Marshall (Phoebe Tonkin).

The series follows Hope attending the Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted, a supernatural institution in Mystic Falls, in order to learn to control her supernatural gifts and impulses. The series also stars a number of Vampire Diaries characters, including Alaric Saltzman (Mattew Davis) and Jeremy Gilbert (Steven R. McQueen).

As per the report, Legacies season 4 will be the last. The CW Network has announced that the show won’t return for season 5. The cancellation of the series brings the Vampire Diaries franchise’s 13-year run on the CW to an end.

Legacies Season 5 Canceled: What’s the reason behind it?

According to reports, the decision to cancel the series was made by The CW’s corporate parents, Warner Bros. Television, and CBS Studios. The company is now looked after by the newly merged Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global. The new merger partners are looking to cut costs at the cable network to focus more on streaming.

As a result, in addition to Legacies, several The CW shows, DynastyCharmedIn the DarkRoswellNew MexicoBatwoman, and Legends of Tomorrow were also axed. Vampire Diaries creator Julie Plec described it as a Red Wedding-style wave of cancellations. She tweeted:

So, in simple words, it’s all about money and ratings. The new corporate ownership has come hard on shows that aren’t generating enough revenue for the network. On the other hand, The CW has already renewed the high-rated shows. Some of them are Superman & Lois, All American, Riverdale, The Flash, and more.

Legacies Season 4 finale will air on The CW on June 16, 2022. As mentioned above, it will mark the end of the Vampire Diaries franchise.
