The Rookie is an American police procedural crime drama television series created by Alexi Hawley for ABC. It is one of the most unusual procedural series you would ever see despite it being based on a true story. Since its debut in 2018, The Rookie has impressed viewers and acquired millions of fans. The fourth season of the series aired on AMC from Sep 26, 2021, to May 15, 2022. The fans have been waiting for the next chapter of the series since the previous season concluded in May 2022. Will there be The Rookie Season 5?
Fans would be excited to know that their favorite police procedural drama is returning for a new season. On March 30, 2022, ABC renewed the series for a fifth season. In fact, the network has also planned an FBI spinoff to the series. So, it is evident that ABC is looking to expand The Rookie franchise and we would get more seasons in the future.
The Rookie Season 5 Plot
The American television series follows a forty-something man named, John Nolan, who becomes the oldest rookie at the Los Angeles Police Department. The Rookie is actually based on real-life Los Angeles Police Department officer William Norcross, who moved to Los Angeles in 2015 and joined the department in his mid-40s.
Over the past four seasons, we have seen John busting drug cartels and arresting serial killers. It looks like seasonal work for him now and the fans are expecting a change with promotion.
However, things won’t be changing much for him in the upcoming season.
Via Deadline, during a 2022 San Diego Comic-Con panel, Nathan Fillion stated that Season 5 would see his character live up to the titular title despite a promotion. Fillion said that John will become a training officer in the new season and will also mentor a new rookie cop. It’s a chance for the character to teach what he’s learned, and the added responsibility is also a new beginning.
According to sources, this season holds a whole lot of drama. The Rookie’s producer Alexi Hawley gave clues to the fans about upcoming storylines. According to them, the character Nyla will have a fun storyline regarding her pregnancy, which was revealed in season 4. She also confirmed an arc featuring Wesley Evers taking a stab at policing from the legal side of things. As for Chenford, we may just see Lucy and Tim’s romance on screen.
“Obviously, we left quite the cliffhanger last season with the kiss which we’ve been building up to,” Alexi said in an interview. “There will definitely be some repercussions and fallout from that.”
The Rookie Season 5 Release Date
The show debuted on ABC on October 16, 2018, and the very first season ran until April 16, 2019. After being renewed for a new season, the second season aired on September 29, 2019, and ended on May 10, 2020. The third season was released in early January of 2021 and ended on May 16, 2021. The show was renewed for a fourth season, which premiered on September 26, 2021.
The show is set to premiere on Sunday nights from September 25 at 10 p.m. ET onwards on ABC. The show’s Instagram was announced in early June after season 4 concluded.

According to TVLine, on the Season 5 premiere titled Double Down, officer John Nolan (Nathan Fillion) once again comes face-to-face with serial killer Rosalind Dyer (returning guest star Annie Wersching). Lucy and Tim, meanwhile, once again find themselves working undercover, with Detective Angela Lopez (Alyssa Diaz) and the Las Vegas PD, to nab the leaders of a major criminal cartel.

The actor who is definitely coming back for season 5 is Tru Valentino. He had a recurring role throughout season 4 as a rookie officer named Aaron Thorsen.
Annie Wersching is reprising her role as dangerous serial killer Rosalind Dyer, who first appeared during the second season. As per the Deadline article, Lisseth Chavez joins the fifth season cast as a character named Celina.
How many episodes will be there in The Rookie Season 5?
The first two seasons that started airing in September had 20 episodes each. The third season had only 14 episodes as it suffered due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Rookie was back to its Sep to May release schedule for its fourth season. The Rookie Season 4 aired on ABC from Sep 26, 2021, to May 15, 2022, comprised of 22 episodes.
So, considering the premiere date of the fifth season, we expect it to have at least 20 episodes. One point to note here is that The Rookie will air on Sundays now. Earlier, it used to air on Tuesday nights on ABC.
Instead, Tuesday night seems to be reserved for The Rookie: Feds, a spinoff to The Rookie, that premieres on September 27, 2022, on ABC.

Season 5 of The Rookie will air on ABC from Sep 25, 2022, from 10 p.m. ET onwards. New episodes will air on Sunday nights starting from Sep 25.
