Outlander is a well-known historical drama television series based on Diana Gabaldon’s ongoing novel series of the same name. The plot centres around a former Second World War military nurse in Scotland who is transported back in time to 1743 in 1945. There she meets Jamie Fraser, a gorgeous Highland warrior from Gabaldon’s fictionalised Clan Fraser of Lovat, who falls in love with him, and they are married. Therefore, she gets involved in the Jacobite uprising.
The show premiered on Starz on August 9, 2014. As of today, six seasons of the series have been released. The series has been renewed for a seventh season of sixteen episodes, which has made fans go nuts.

There were reports that the series has been cancelled. However, there is no truth in these reports. Outlander Season 7 is definitely happening. We know for sure that it started filming on April 6, 2022, Starz posted on Twitter: “The cast and crew are back at it – #Outlander Season 7 is in production!”
Outlander Season 7 Release Date
The seventh season of Outlander was announced on March 14, 2021, way before the sixth season premiere. Season 6 of the historical drama premiered on March 6, 2022, and concluded on May 1, 2022. Filming for the seventh season started in May 2022.
Well, here is some good news for all fans out there. Season 7 is coming sooner than we expected. The upcoming seventh season which consists of 16 episodes, is based on An Echo in the Bone and is set to premiere on June 16, 2023.
The super-sized season is split into two parts of eight episodes each. The first part premieres on Starz on June 16, 2023. It will run through August 4, 2023. The second part of the upcoming season will premiere in 2024.
Outlander Season 7 Plot
Season six ended with major cliffhangers that will undoubtedly be followed up in season seven. However, no major plot details have been divulged, but the seventh season is based on a book named “An Echo in the Bone,” which is the seventh book in the Outlander series of novels.
As fans will be aware though, the television series doesn’t always stick entirely to the timeline of the books, so expect elements from other novels as well as some elements unique to the screen version.
The seventh season must also specify who killed Malva and what the importance of time traveller Wendigo Donner’s arrival signifies for the Fraser family. The Fraser family will face a great deal more danger in the future. Also, season six’s finale alluded to the nation’s escalating unrest as Claire arrived in Wilmington, and Fraser’s Ridge will see the Revolutionary War draw ever closer in season seven.
How many episodes will be there on Outlander Season 7?
While season six was cut short to eight episodes due to the global pandemic, it has been confirmed that season seven will be a super-sized one with 16 episodes.
Showrunner Matthew B. Roberts said: “Filming in 2021 has presented an unprecedented set of challenges which led us to the decision to truncate the season in order to bring the fans the most vibrant and dynamic season as soon as possible. Dinna fash, we will then film an extended season 7 with 16 episodes next year as life returns to normalcy.”
Season 7 will be the longest season since the first, which also had 16 episodes, released in two parts of 8 episodes each. It is expected that Season 7 will also be split into two parts.
Outlander Season 7 Cast
The upcoming season will see the return of familiar faces. Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan will once again be starring as Claire and Jamie Fraser. Sophie Skelton and Richard Rankin are returning as Brianna and Roger, along with Mark Lewis Jones as Tom Christie, John Bell as Young Ian, and Alexander Vlahos as Allan Christie.

There are 10 books in the Outlander series, which has led many to speculate that there will be 10 seasons of the series. However, Caitriona Balfe said it could be a “nice kind of time frame” to end the show when it reaches its 10-year mark in 2024, suggesting season 7 to be the last season.
A prequel is also in development
Starz has confirmed that a prequel is also on the way. Earlier this year, the official Twitter account announced: “The #Outlander universe is expanding! Outlander: Blood of My Blood, a prequel that will follow the love story of Jamie Fraser’s parents, is officially in development at STARZ.”
