‘1883’ by Taylor Sheridan, a prequel to his series ‘Yellowstone’, premiered in Dec 2021. The limited series comprised 10 episodes in all, started streaming on December 19, 2021, and wrapped on February 27, 2022. The series follows the Dutton family after the Civil War as they leave Tennessee, travel to Fort Worth, Texas, and join a wagon train heading west to Oregon. Eventually, they settle in Montana, where they establish the Yellowstone Ranch.
The first season of 1883 was quite emotional and absorbing as we witnessed several members dying. ‘1883’ was never supposed to get a second season, but rather a one-season limited series. Even though Paramount ordered “additional episodes” on February 15, they never commented if there will be a second season. The executive producer of ‘1883’ and Yellowstone, David Glasser stated in an interview that the fans should not expect another season of ‘1883’. Further, he also said that the story will continue, however. Although he didn’t say when or in what form the episodes will come out, guess it’ll be followed by a sequel series.
Well, David Glasser was right as Paramount soon announced another prequel in the Yellowstone franchise, ‘1923’. Debuted on Dec 18, 2022, it served as a sequel to 1883.
The series follows a generation of the Dutton family in 1923, during a time of various hardships including Prohibition, drought, and the early stages of the Great Depression, which affected Montana long before the 1929 Stock Market Crash.
The Yellowstone universe is growing even more with another spinoff titled 6666, which will revolve around the Four Sixes Ranch in West Texas.
Will there be ‘1883’ Season 2?
Yes, 1883 is getting another season – but in a different way. We have already received a sequel in the form of 1923.
We will get a new series titled 1883: The Bass Reeves Story. This will serve as the second season. In May 2022, it was announced that the sophomore season will introduce new characters and storylines as it focuses on the inspiration for the Lone Ranger.
“Known as the greatest frontier hero in American history, Reeves worked in the post-Reconstruction era as a federal peace officer in the Indian Territory, capturing over 3,000 of the most dangerous criminals without ever being wounded,” the official long line for 1883: The Bass Reeves Story read. 1883 Season 2 Release Date
Paramount earlier said the “next chapter” of 1883 will arrive later this year. Production began in October 2022 and is still ongoing. We are expecting the second season to premiere in Fall 2023.
Meanwhile, Paramount+ has already renewed 1923 for the second season. Back to the original show, Yellowstone, the fifth season debuted in Nov 2022. Season 5 will return for its final set of episodes in November 2023. It is going to be the final season as Paramount has cancelled the series.
