  • In January 2023, Starz confirmed the show would be coming back for one more season.

Outlander, the critically acclaimed historical drama series, has captivated audiences with its captivating storytelling and unforgettable characters. Adapted from Diana Gabaldon’s best-selling book series, the show has transported viewers through time and across continents.

The plot centres around a former Second World War military nurse in Scotland who is transported back in time to 1743 in 1945. There she meets Jamie Fraser, a gorgeous Highland warrior from Gabaldon’s fictionalised Clan Fraser of Lovat, who falls in love with him, and they are married. Therefore, she gets involved in the Jacobite uprising.

The show premiered on Starz on August 9, 2014. As of today, six seasons of the series have been released and the seventh one is set to premiere on June 16, 2023. But some fans are already thinking way ahead and awaiting the next chapter in the epic saga of Jamie and Claire Fraser.

This article will explore everything you need to know about Outlander Season 8 and what lies ahead for our beloved characters.

Season 8 will be the final chapter

In January 2023, Starz confirmed the show would be coming back for one more season.

“For nearly a decade ‘Outlander’ has won the hearts of audiences worldwide and we’re pleased to bring Claire and Jamie’s epic love story to a proper conclusion,” said Kathryn Busby, President, Original Programming for STARZ.

“But before we close this chapter there is plenty of their passionate story to tell over the course of 26 new episodes and even more to explore of this dynamic world and its origin story. We’re thrilled to continue to partner with Matthew, Maril and Ronald and can’t wait to see where their alluring storytelling takes us next.”

26 episodes here refer to 16 episodes of the seventh season plus 10 episodes of the eighth season.

When will Outlander Season 8 Premiere?

It is anticipated that the eighth and final season’s production would start in Scotland later this year. Since the series is still in pre-production, there is obviously still a lot of time. Therefore, there is a risk that the release of the final season may be delayed. If this occurs, the network will subsequently formally acknowledge it.

According to a recent report by Radiotimes, the filming for the final season has been delayed due to ongoing writers’ strikes in the US. If the strike ends in the next few weeks, we speculatively believe that the final season may aim to be released before the end of 2024 or even the start of 2025. Additionally, the eighth season of “Outlander” will be ten episodes long. Following a 16-episode Season 7 that will premiere on Starz on June 16, 2023.

What will Outlander Season 8 be about?

Well, it is difficult to predict the story as the seventh season hasn’t even started airing yet. Season 7, consisting of 16 episodes, will draw from Gabaldon’seventh book in the series, namely An Echo in My Bones.

As for Season 8, comprising 10 episodes, it is likely to adapt books eight and nine, namely “Written in My Own Heart’s Blood” and “Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone.”

Gabaldon recently finished her ninth book in the series, Go Tell the Bees That I Am Goneand is now working on her tenth and likely final novel, which may or may not wrap up the love story of Jamie and Claire Fraser.

Well, if we have to make a guess, Revolutionary War will be in full swing in the final season. Jamie and Claire will be caught up in it in some form or another. Roger and Brianna will have come back from the future trying to find their place in the 18th century, and Young Ian will either be married or engaged.

Who is in the cast?

As we still need to wait for the seventh season to end in order to gain some indication of which characters may be able to make a comeback in the show’s final season, there hasn’t been any formal confirmation concerning the returning cast members. However, the following cast is expected to return for season 8. Check it out:

  • Caitríona Balfe as Claire Randall Fraser
