Unlike previous seasons, Dear White People season 4 builds its story as a musical. Based on a real-life tradition at Columbia University, the students work to produce the annual satirical musical about the school.

Samantha (Browning) is filming the musical drama. The Black students of Armstrong-Parker House are writing the show for the first time in Winchester history. The musical is ’90s-themed with performances of Jordan’s “This Is How We Do It,” En Vogue’s “Free Your Mind,” and Johnny Gill’s “Run You the Right Way,” among other famous songs. However, everyone is not pleased with the varsity show. A member of the school’s “Black AF” group comparing it to a musician show and declares protest.

One character that won’t be returning is Jeremy Tardy’s Rashid Bakr. According to Variety, he was asked by Lionsgate Television (production company) to return, but he decided to exit the series, alleging the company showed discrimination in pay negotiations.

There are some new additions to the cast for the upcoming season. Karamo Brown of Queer Eye has joined the cast for a recurring role. His character details are being kept under wraps.

Deadline reported in February 2021 that Rome Flynn of How to Get Away With Murder has joined the cast.
