Akshay Kumar has started shooting for his fourth film of the year. Titled Padman, the movie is a social drama and will be first production venture for Akshay’s wife Twinkle Khanna. The film will be directed by R. Balki.
“Embarking on a new journey, this time with the Mrs. First day of ‘Pad Man’, directed by R. Balki. Need your love and luck as always,” Akshay tweeted.
Twinkle Khanna also seems excited for her first production venture as she tweeted, “And so it begins ‘Pad Man’’”.
Padman is said to be based on the true story of Arunachalam Muruganantham. Akshay will play Arunachalam Muruganantham, a social entrepreneur from Coimbatore. Winner of Padma Shri award, Arunachalam is the inventor of a low-cost sanitary pad making machine. He has innovated grass-roots mechanisms for generating awareness about traditional unhygienic practices around menstruation in rural India.
He took it upon himself to manufacturer cheap, affordable sanitary napkins for women in his village. It’s said he was disturbed when he discovered his wife collecting filthy rags and newspapers to use during her menstrual cycle, as sanitary napkins made by multinational corporations were expensive.
Directed by R. Balki, Padman also stars Sonam Kapoor and Radhika Apte. Co-produced by Twinkle Khanna and R. Balki, the movie is expected to hit the theatres in Dec 2017.
