Yellowjackets is an American thriller drama TV series created by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson. The intense thrilling drama which revolves around a powerful all-star female cast, has become a showcase for some of the best storytelling and performances on television right now.
The show revolves around a New Jersey high school girls’ soccer team travelling to Seattle in 1996 for a national competition. Their plane crashes in the middle of the woods while they are flying over Canada, leaving the team members who survived stranded for nineteen months. The series follows their current life in 2021 and their attempts to survive as some of the team members are driven to cannibalism.
After the super success of the first season, the second season of Yellowjackets was swiftly renewed, and the third season renewal happened even quicker.
In December 2022, Showtime renewed Yellowjackets for Season 3, around three months before the second season premiere in March 2023.
Showtime and Paramount Media President Chris McCarthy explained the decision to renew Yellowjackets early, noting that they simply wanted to “maximize the momentum” of the show:
With ‘Yellowjackets’ runaway success in season one and the pent-up anticipation for season two, we wanted to maximize the momentum by fast tracking season three now. The show’s ambition is only exceeded by its execution, and I thank the incredible creative team behind it, including Ashley, Bart, Jonathan, eOne and the Showtime team, for turning this into such a success.
Despite quick approval fans need to wait for the third season of the show as it is delayed due to the WGA strike.

Latest update on Yellowjackets Season 3
The writers’ room of the show shut down after one day when the Writers Guild of America’s strike began on May 2, 2023.
Deadline reported that Yellowjackets‘ writers’ room opened on October 4, once the WGA strike resolved on Sep 27. It means that work for Season 3 has begun.
However, it remains to be seen when will we get new episodes of Yellowjackets. There was a 14-month gap between the premieres of the first and second seasons.
Yellowjackets made its debut on Showtime on November 14, 2021. Season 2 then premiered on the network on March 26, 2022.
When is Yellowjackets Season 3 Release Date?
Before you get disappointed, here is some good news for you. Yellowjackets co-creator Ashley Lyle confirmed in June 2023 that a “bonus episode” will be released between Seasons 2 and 3.
There will be a bonus episode between seasons, but I love you guys and I don’t want y’all to lose sleep thinking it’s tonight.
So, before the third season premieres, we will get a bonus episode and this will be the priority of the writing team.

The scripting for Yellowjackets Season 2 in May 2022, with cameras rolling in August 2022, via Collider. Production concluded in February 2023, paving the way for its debut on Showtime in March 2023.
If the third season follows a similar timeline, the scripting for Yellowjackets Season 3 might be completed within three months, potentially allowing for production to commence in January 2024.
In case of no delays going forward, we can expect Yellowjackets Season 3 to premiere on Showtime by the end of 2024.
As far as the bonus episode is concerned, Showtime is contemplating a potential release in mid-2024, aligning with the commitment made by Yellowjackets co-creator Ashley Lyle that it will air before Season 3.
