Nikkhil Advani’s web series ‘The Empire’ will premiere on Disney+ Hotstar soon. It was earlier titled Moghul. Here’s is everything you need to know.
Disney+ Hotstar and Nikkhil Advani’s Emmay Entertainment have collaborated for a historical web series The Empire – an epic saga. Earlier titled Moghuls, it is a screen adaptation of Alex Rutherford’s six-volume historical fiction novel, Empire of the Moghul, which starts with Babur and ends with the reign of Aurangzeb. The Empire is lauded to be one of the most ambitious shows ever produced in India. The audience has been eagerly waiting for the show to premiere since its announcement. From its cast to release date, here is what we know about this epic show.
What will be the plot of Moghuls?
The show is a screen adaptation of Alex Rutherford’s six-volume historical fiction novel, Empire of the Moghul, which starts with Babur and ends with the reign of Aurangzeb. It is anticipated that the first season of The Empire would revolve around Babur, his obsession with the city of Samarkand, and his rule in Kabul before he came to Hindustan. The first season will most likely set up the tone and premise for the show to progress to successive seasons.
The cast of Moghuls web series
The Empire will witness a stellar cast, comprising Kunal Kapoor, Shabana Azmi, Drashti Dhami, and Dia Mirza. Kunal will portray the protagonist’s role of Babur, whereas Dia Mirza will be seen essaying Babur’s sister Khanzada. Shabana Azmi will be playing Babur’s grandmother, Esan Daulat, who took charge and crowned Babur as King at 12 years of age, after his father Umar Shaikh’s death. Loveyatri actress Warina Hussain will also star in the show. However, details about her roles are still kept under wrap. The rest of the cast hasn’t been revealed yet. Earlier, Ronit Roy was roped in to play Babur on the show. However, later it was reported that he has left the project
What’s the production status?
The show is produced by Nikkhil Advani, who an interview with Mumbai Mirror said, “I have always been fascinated by the Moghul era, its politics and the lives of the emperors, so when the channel came to me with the adaptation rights to the book, I was happy to come on board.” Bhavani Iyer has written the screenplay, and Kausar Munir has penned the dialogues for the show. The epic Mughal drama is directed by Mitakshara Kumar
Principal photography took place in Jaipur in September 2018 and moved to Karjat for two weeks as they wanted to be authentic to books. The second schedule started in February 2019 as Nikkhil Advani was busy with his film Batla House in between. The shoot had been progressing at a brisk pace till the Covid-19 pandemic played spoilsport, forcing them to halt production. As per the reports coming, the filming was wrapped up earlier this year.

When will ‘The Empire’ premiere on Disney+ Hotstar?
There is no official announcement regarding the release date. However, with the first look already out, the series will most likely premiere in August or September 2021.
