Mindhunter Season 3 release date: Will Netflix renew Mindhunter for another season? Here’s what you need to know about the future of David Fincher’s acclaimed crime series.
- While fans are eagerly waiting for season 3 release, in January 2020, Netflix put the renewal of the series on indefinite hold.
- Producer-director David Fincher is busy with other projects.
Netflix’s gripping crime-thriller show Mindhunter is based on the true-crime book Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit written by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker. It revolves around FBI agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench, along with psychologist Wendy Carr, who operates the FBI’s Behavioural Science Unit within the Training Division at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia. They interview imprisoned serial killers to understand how they think, with the hope of applying this knowledge to solve ongoing cases.
After the remarkable success of previous seasons, fans are eagerly waiting for the third season. However, in January 2020, Netflix put the renewal of the series on indefinite hold. The show is not technically cancelled – just that the cast and crew were released from their contracts). Realistically, the chances of reassembling them in the future are slim and so as for another season of Mindhunter.
The director, David Fincher’s is busy with other projects and it is one of the reasons behind the delay of Mindhunter Season 3. While we remain optimistic regarding the renewal, we bring to you all the details of Season 3.
What Will Be The Plot of Mindhunter Season 3?
Mindhunter’s first season took place in the late 1970s, with its second season picking up in the early 1980s. It’s reasonable to expect that Season 3 would take place in the early to mid-1980s. The likes of ‘Butcher Baker’ Robert Hansen, ‘Green River Killer’ Gary Ridgway, ‘Night Stalker’ Richard Ramirez and ‘Milwaukee Cannibal’ Jeffrey Dahmer and BRK Killer are all names that have been speculated.
Apart from the serial killers who play a key role in each season, the central cast of Mindhunter also has some issues of their own which will continue to be explored in future episodes. One twist that holds particularly powerful repercussions for season three revolves around Bill Tench’s son Brian and the child murder he witnessed midway through season two. So we’ve got to wait with bated breath for unravelling these answers.

Has Netflix Cancelled Mindhunter?
Netflix hasn’t officially cancelled Mindhunter yet. A spokesperson confirmed that season 3 isn’t in the works right now, but noted that it could maybe happen in 5-10 years.
Netflix executives also have to look at the viewership of the series and analyse it with the cost of production. According to a report, Fincher confirmed that Mindhunter season 3 won’t happen in the near future. He makes an association between the viewership and the cost of production, stating “on some level, you have to be realistic – dollars have to equal eyeballs.”
With regard to Netflix putting the show on hold indefinitely, a representative for Netflix told Thrillist, “[Fincher] may revisit Mindhunter again in the future, but in the meantime felt it wasn’t fair to the actors to hold them from seeking other work while he was exploring new work of his own.”
Cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt, who worked on much of Mindhunter and collaborated with Fincher again on movie name Mank, did admit to Thrillist in June that he doesn’t know what’s going on with the series but would like to see it continue. He said, “I’ve heard things are on hold for a little bit. We’ll see. Who knows? But it would be an honour to go back.”
When Will Mindhunter Season 3 Premiere?
Given that the series is on indefinite hold, we can only speculate as to when, if ever, Season 3 premieres on Netflix. Fincher is busy with Season 2 of “Love, Death + Robots” and “Mank”. We must also consider the coronavirus pandemic, which stopped countless shows and movies from going into production.
All things considered, we’re probably looking at Mindhunter arriving in 2022 at the earliest if it’s back at all. Season 1 premiered in October 2017 and season 2 in August 2019, so fans are used to waiting. We’ll just have to wait a bit longer than originally expected.
