Lost in Space is one of the top show sci-fi shows on Netflix. Even before the premiere of the second season in Dec 2019, rumours were rife that there will be another instalment of the show. The sci-fi series is a reboot of the 1965 series of the same name (itself a reimagining of the 1812 novel The Swiss Family Robinson). In March 2020, Netflix renewed announced the third and final season of the series. The announcement sent the fans into a frenzy and since then they are eagerly awaiting updates regarding the upcoming season. What can we expect from Lost in Space season 3? What’s the release date. Here’s everything you need to know about the show’s final season.
Lost in Space Season 3: Renewal status
The official announcement about season 3 renewal came on Mar 10, 2020. It was also confirmed the third season as the final season of the series.
As expected the announcement received mixed responses as fans were not expecting the series to end with just three seasons. A statement shared by showrunner Zack Estrin on Twitter reads:
From the beginning, we’ve always viewed this particular story of The Robinsons as a trilogy. A 3 part epic family adventure with a clear beginning, middle and end. It’s also worth noting that, with what these characters go through just trying to survive each episode — if anyone deserves to catch their breath before their next mission — it’s Will, Penny, Judy, Maureen, John, Don West, Dr. Smith… and The Robot. And, of course, Debbie the Chicken. So while this chapter of Lost In Space is coming to a rousing conclusion, I’m excited about continuing to explore new stories with my friends at Netflix, and for all of the incredible possibilities that lie ahead.
What Will Be The Plot of Lost in Space Season 3?
Lost in Space follows the Robinson family, who in the aftermath of an impact event that threatens the survival of humanity. The Robinsons are selected for the 24th mission of the Resolute (24th Colonist Group), an interstellar spacecraft carrying selected families to colonize the Alpha Centauri star system. But, before they reach their destination, an alien robot breaks the Resolute‘s frame.
Forced to evacuate the mothership, the Robinsons along with other colonists, crash on a nearby livable planet. Now the challenge for them is to contend with the new environment and battle their own personal demons as they seek a way back to the Resolute.
It is anticipated that season three will reveal the alterations of the giant cliffhanger that ended Season 2, where the family was split up after a struggle with invading robots. The biggest question coming to Lost in Space Season 3 involves the Fortuna, the long-lost ship piloted by Grant Kelly, Judy’s biological dad.
In addition, showrunner, Zack Estrin told Pop Culture Times, “A big thing happened at the end of season 2: the kids and parents have split apart; we are going to pick up with two separate stories in season three. How do the kids and the parents find their way back together? What’s it like for the kids without the guide of their parents? It’s like a permanent summer camp except for the fact that the ants and insects are just big things that eat you.”

When Will ‘Lost in Space Season 3’ Premiere on Netflix?
Netflix has not yet announced an official release date. Before the coronavirus pandemic, season 3 was predicted to be released halfway through 2021. With filming wrapped in January, we need to wait for at least 8-10 months for season three to land on Netflix, keeping in mind the VFX-heavy narrative. Our guess for the release of Lost in Space Season 3 would be the last quarter of 2021.
With months left for Lost In Space season 3 premiere, you can stream seasons 1,2 on Netflix.
