After two successful seasons, HBO Max’s comedy-drama series Hacks is set to return for its most-awaited third season.
Created by Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello, and Jen Statsky, Hacks premiered on HBO Max on May 13, 2021. It soon became a fan favourite and gained critical acclaim for its writing, performances, and exploration of relevant topics, thanks to its blend of humour, wit, and poignant moments. The series focuses on the professional relationship between a young comedy writer and a legendary stand-up comedian.
Hacks got 32 Emmy Award nominations during its current run, with three culminating in victories for the TV show. The show has successfully premiered two seasons, and fans of Max’s Hacks are eagerly awaiting the release of season 3.

When Will Hacks Season 3 Release?
Fans of Hacks were concerned that the series may also perish in the HBO backroom mayhem. Thankfully, HBO Max renewed the series for a third season in June 2022.
Sarah Aubrey, head of original content at HBO Max, congratulated the team behind the series after it was renewed:
We congratulate ‘Hacks’’ extraordinarily gifted executive producers and cast, and our partners at Universal Television. We are overjoyed at the audience and press response to the new season, and glad to give viewers more of this gorgeous, hilarious, moving show.
The first two seasons of Hacks premiered in May. So, it was expected that the third season would also debut in May 2023.
However, there have been significant delays. Even though Season 3 is halfway through production, the unexpected delay has pushed the show’s release date back to a later undetermined date.
The series had to be delayed since Jean Smart had to have heart surgery. Thankfully, the actress recovered swiftly. In February 2023, lead star Jean Smart announced on Instagram that she recovered from a “successful heart procedure:”
“February is American Heart Month — a time when the nation spotlights heart health, so it feels important to share with all of you that I’m recovering from a recent, successful heart procedure. I am fortunate to have excellent professional care and support from family and friends while I continue to recuperate. Please listen to your body and talk to your doctor — I’m very glad I did.”
In Feb 2023, The Hollywood Reporter reported that some departments on season three of ‘Hacks’ have paused production amid the star’s recovery. After the actress’ successful recovery, production resumed in March 2023.
However, in May 2023, the ongoing writer’s strike by the Writers Guild of America (WGA) forced showrunners Paul Downs, Lucia Aniello, and Jen Statsky to shut down production.
Talking to Deadline, Jen Statsky looked devastated and said that “there was no other option” due to the strike:
Everything has therefore been put on hold until the strike is over. Therefore, the show won’t return until 2024, potentially around May (Seasons 1 and 2 premiered during the same month).

What will happen next? Hacks Season 3 Plot
The second season of Hacks concluded with a stunning twist as Deborah made the surprising decision to dismiss Ava. She explained that it was time to bring their partnership to a close, encouraging Ava to embark on her own path in pursuit of personal fulfilment and success.
The showrunners haven’t revealed many specifics about season 3 up to this point. However, showrunner Paul W. Downs confirmed to Deadline that Season 3 will feature a significant time jump:
“We do start a year after we left our girls. So there’s a jump in time. A lot has happened.”
The story will probably centre on a new journey as Deborah basks in her newfound success and Ava toils away at her new profession. Additionally, it will depict Jimmy establishing his own talent agency with Kayla’s assistance. Jimmy tolerates Kayla because of the revenue she generates. Moreover, Deborah and Ava will probably get back together sooner or later, but the stories will probably focus on different facets of life in Hollywood first.
