Bollywood movies make us happy, they make us sad, they make us laugh and cry at the same time. The characters portrayed in the movies have such a great impact in our life that they seem almost real to us. These are characters that have grown much bigger than the worlds they inhabited. There are so many characters that have inspired, affected and entranced us so deeply that it is very difficult to decide which are most iconic. So, here is a short list of those 10 characters which come to our minds as soon as we mention Bollywood.
Here are the 10 most iconic Bollywood characters of all time
1. Gabbar Singh in Sholay
“Kitne aadmi the?” the mention of this dialogue itself is proof enough to show how much Gabbar Singh is feared(/loved) by all. Amjad Khan as Gabbar Singh showed us that a villain and his dialogue can be the center of attraction in a multi-star movie. “Beta, Soja Nahi To Gabbar Aa Jaega”, was enough to put kids to sleep those days.
2. Mogambo in Mr. India
Our next favorite character is Mogambo from Mr. India. The role, played by Amrish Puri has been made famous by the catchphrase “Mogambo Khush Hua” along with an iconic drumming of fingers. The threat posed by Mogambo was clear by the fact how his partners were afraid of being drowned to death in his “acid pool”.
3. Jai-Veeru in Sholay
Together they gave us Bollywood’s most famous on-screen friendship! “Yeh Dosti Hum Nahi Todenge”, Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra’s camaraderie as Jai and Veeru in “Sholay” has been voted the best example of onscreen friendships in Bollywood. The unsuccessful movie “Jai-Veeru” with Fardeen Khan and Kunal Khemu was just a minor attempt to reflect how deeply this bromance has affected us.
4. Munna Bhai in Munna bhai MBBS and Lage Raho Munna Bhai
Our next favorite character is the lovable Munnabhai in both Munnabhai MBBS and Lage Raho Munnabhai. We were astonished to see how a typical Mumbaikar ‘Bhai’ can also be a warm-hearted, kind and loving person. His “Jaadu ki Jhappi” is something that will be remembered for a long time!
5. Crime Master Gogo in Andaz Apna Apna
Alleged to be Mogambo’s Bhatija, Crime master Gogo portrayed by Shakti Kapoor in Andaaz Apna Apna represents Bollywood’s flair for mixing the bad with the comic. Shakti Kapoor showed us the comic avatar of a failed Don. “Aankhen Nikaal Kar Gotiyan Khelunga”, was surely repeated by Gogo lovers thousands of times.
6. Vijay Deenanath Chauhan in Agneepath
Amitabh Bachchan as Vijay Deenanath Chauhan showed us the best possible show of an angry and revenge driven son, clad in his iconic white three-piece and kohl-covered eyes. “Aaj sham 6 baje maut ke saath apna appointment hai. Appointment.” Hrithik Roshan did it too. But AB did it better.
7. Devdas Mukherjee in both versions of Devdas
Dilip Kumar and Shahrukh Khan both created magic as Devdas. We’re stuck trying to decide who made a better Devdas. Immortally beautiful performances, both of them! But no doubt they created a larger than life character to be remembered forever.
8. Geet in Jab We Met
Kareena Kapoor as Geet showed us the lovely side of a free-spirited and optimistic girl.
“Ab to haath chhod do mera! Itni bhi sundar nahi hun main!”
“Achha? Consumer court se poochun kya rate hai?”
“Bhai sahab, hum room ghante ke hisab se lenge.”
“Koi doubt mat rakhna dil mein! Sikhni hun main Bhatinda ki!”
You know what I mean…
9. Rani in Queen
Because witnessing her transform from a heartbroken, morose bride to a happy and liberated woman was a collective catharsis that we can’t seem to get enough of! Thank you Kangana for bringing this character to life!
10. Raj & Simran in DDLJ
The iconic couple that taught a whole generation that true love involves the girl rushing through a lush Sarson ka khet and straight into the outstretched arms of the love of her life. While Raj is every girl’s dream boy, Simran was loved by all.
