The Gray Man is an American action thriller directed by the Russo brothers. The plot revolves around CIA operative “Sierra Six,” who is on the run from a psychopathic ex-CIA agent and mercenary, Lloyd Hansen, after finding dirty facts about his superior. Debuted on Netflix on July 22, 2022, The Gray Man is Netflix’s most expensive and ambitious feature film yet.

Therefore, as a cherry on top for fans, The Russo Brothers have recently revealed that The Gray Man 2 is currently in the early stages of development, which is an encouraging update for fans of the film. Building on the success of “The Gray Man,” the highly anticipated sequel will take audiences on a thrilling trip that pushes the genre’s boundaries.

But, when is it going to premiere? Who will be the cast? What will the sequel have in store? In order to know, keep on reading. Here’s everything you need to know about The Gray Man 2.

When will The Gray Man 2 Premiere?

The Russo Brothers have announced that The Gray Man 2 is currently in the early stages of development, which is amazing news for fans. However, no filming dates have yet been disclosed. Since the creators are now preoccupied with their ongoing projects, we won’t see any cameras rolling until at least late 2023, if not 2024. Therefore, fans will have to wait a long time to see the brand-new sequel.

The Gray Man ending explained

At the climax of The Gray Man, Hansen takes Claire hostage in a mansion. Six and Dani join forces to set her free and kill Hansen. In the process, Fitzroy, who is also being held hostage, blows himself up, but he fails to kill Hansen. Just when Six is about to kill Hansen, Suzanne Brewer shoots him first.

Then, she shoots Six and takes Claire and the data card. She leaves Six alive to use him in the future, but he escapes custody shortly after. The film ends with Six escaping custody and freeing Claire, who is being held at a secret location.

What will it be about? The Gray Man 2 Plot

Despite significant differences from the original material, The Gray Man is based on Mark Greaney’s 2009 spy thriller novel of the same name. Therefore, Netflix’s sequel to the film might adapt the second book in the long-running book series which already has thirteen installments.

Here’s the synopsis of the second book titled On Target.

“Court Gentry, (Gosling) aka the Gray Man, is back – and once again on the run from old friends and foes. Four years ago, Gentry was betrayed by his handlers in the CIA. Now, an old comrade, Russian arms merchant Sidorenko, returns to force him on a mission against his will: kill Sudan’s President Abboud, the supposed trigger for the Darfur genocide. But the CIA has its own plans for Abboud. With his ruthless employers on one side, his blackmailing former friends on the other, and a doomed mission ahead, Gentry would kill just to get out of this one alive.”

As mentioned above, the first movie diverged from the original source material, and it seems the second movie will follow suit. However, we do have some insight into the overall trajectory of the story.

Here’s what Russo Brother’s said about the sequel:

“The sequel will be inspired by the Mark Greaney novel. Translating from one medium to another often requires interpretation, but we have an incredible amount of source material from an amazing offer. We’ll draw on that for the sequel.”

“We’re in the middle of it [writing] right now. We’re in the middle of working on The Gray Man 2 script, so, again, everything is about the story. We are hard at work, sleeves rolled up, and more to come soon.”

With the WGA strike started in May 2023, it is highly probable that the Russo Brothers are still actively engaged in the development of The Gray Man 2 script. Let’s hope that the pre-production begins soon.

Netflix is also making a spin-off

Alongside the sequel, Netflix is also working on a spin-off movie from Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese. Given that they collaborated on all three Deadpool movies, it is highly likely that the upcoming film will be an action-comedy.

As per the press release for the expansion of The Gray Man Universe:

“A spin-off film, written by acclaimed screenwriters Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese (Deadpool, Zombieland) is set to explore a different element of The Gray Man universe. The logline is being kept under wraps.”
