A tribute to Sridevi Kapoor – Bollywood’s Finest Actress on her Birthday
Remember her for ‘Chaalbaaz’, ‘Roop ki Rani Choron ka Raja’, or her very first ‘Solva Sawan’. She is a heart-throb of Bollywood and needs no introduction. ‘Sridevi’ born as Shree Amma Yanger celebrates her 51st birthday today. A leo by zodiac, she was the Bollywood of 85s, and is still going strong.
Be it ‘English Vinglish’ or ‘ Mr India’ she has always left us spell-bound. Timeless talent, ever Charming, hot and sexy, Sridevi has given bollywood something which is unparalleled.
Sridevi was born in Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu and debuted into cinema as a child artist in “Kandan Karunai” as bubbly ‘Muruga’. This was in 1967 and nine years (1976) later she was doing “Moondru Mudichu” with Kamal Hasan and Rajnikanth. But it was “Aakali Rajyam” which made her a superstar in Tollywood.
‘Himmatwala’ in 1983 opposite Jeetendra marked her first prints in Bollywood, and she never looked back. Sridevi was in demand for every single movie in the era for 1983 to 1997. Then came “Tohfa”, “Justice Chowdhury” and “Mawaali” along with “Nagina”, “Chandni” and “Chaalbaaz”. You can’t skip here movies, I am tempted to label out every flick she did during this era.
While ‘Chaalbaaz‘ was an iconic performance earning her ‘Best Actress’ in Filmfare, 1990; It was ‘Nagina’ and ‘Mr. India’ that are my special favourites and earned her ‘Special Award’ at Filmfare, 1988. Ah! how can I miss ‘Lamhe’ which was the talk of not only b-town but also internationally.
Offers from Hollywood came pouring for Sridevi, but she was ahem happy to refuse them for Bollywood. The most famous of which is Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park. Sridevi settled with Bonney Kapoor in 1996.
During 85s she was the highest paid actor and always portrayed a strong persona with her work. Her movies financially were hit on box office. “Gumrah” and “Judaai”, “Laadla” was a nice grossers. Sridevi and Jeetendra gave us 11 hits out of 16 in which they were casted together. Sri devi also did flick with her brother-in-law Anil Kapoor.
After taking a long break from the industry the living legend returned in 2012 on big screen with English Vinglish. A fabulous movie, wonderfully led by her in and as the main protagonist.
There are less words than what SriDevi is capable of.
