Russian Doll Season 3: Everything We Know About Possible Next Season

Russian Doll Season 3 on Netflix

Russian Doll Season 3: Though there is a good possibility of another season, the show hasn’t been renewed yet.

Netflix’s time-twisting comedy-drama Russian Doll is one of the unique shows on the network. Debuted in Feb 2019, the show has its second season premiered on the streamer in April 2022. It’s been more than three months since the second season debuted on Netflix. The fans are now questioning whether the show would return for the next season. Though there is a good possibility for another season, Netflix hasn’t renewed it yet. Before talking about Russian Doll Season 3, let’s have a recap of the second season.

Russian Doll Season 2 Recap

The first season of the show follows Nadia, a woman, caught in a time loop at her 36th birthday party. She dies repeatedly, always restarting at the same moment at the party. She meets Alan, a man, who is experiencing the same thing in a different event. The first season focused on them figuring out how to break this time loop.

The second season has Nadia time traveling to her past when she was trapped inside her mother’s body. She becomes both her mother and grandmother at certain points in time. Nadia and Alan argue about the messed-up timeline in the final episode of Russian Doll Season 2. In the concluding moments of the season, Nadia decides to hand the baby (herself) back over to her mother and sets the timeline right again. Nadia then heads over to Maxine’s apartment and joins Alan at Ruth’s watch.

What’s the possibility of the Russian Doll returning for Season 3?

Though Netflix hasn’t confirmed season three yet, the writers and creators have planned it. Even before the show debuted on Netflix, Natasha Lyonne, who’s the co-creator and lead star, acknowledged the writing team had a three-season plan from the beginning.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in 2019, She said, “I see it quite concretely, and it will be interesting to see what evolves. The beauty of the power of the writers room is that Alan [Charlie Barnett] was a very different character in the original pitch and pilot. Month two of the room is where he really came alive. Before then, he had been a whole variety of other figures and now, looking back, imagining that show without Alan is almost impossible.:

“Because of that experience, I know there has to be space left open for something beyond my limited imagination in this moment to know if that is still where the series begins, middles and ends. Maybe it’s only two seasons. Maybe it’s four seasons. Right now, it feels quite clearly that it is those three.”

The other co-creator of the show, Leslye Headland also confirmed three seasons while speaking to RadioTimes: “We initially pitched it as three seasons. We came in with it as like, ‘Here’s the idea for season one, here’s the idea for season two, here’s the idea for season three’. So, I could definitely see us going back to one of those ideas.”

The second season was officially announced by Netflix five months after the first season premiered. So, there is hope. Considering how popular the show is and the writers/creators have already planned it, we are expecting Netflix to renew the show sooner or later.

Russian Doll Season 3 Cast

Although the next hasn’t been officially announced, if it happens then Natasha Lyonne will undoubtedly return as the leading lady Nadia Vulvokov. Alan, played by Charlie Barnett has been a pivotal member of the show. So, he will surely return as Nadia’s partner.

but as to whether we see Nadia’s mother Nora (Chloë Sevigny) or Ruth (Annie Murphy in the past, Elizabeth Ashley in the present), that depends on whether we travel back in time again as both characters are now dead.

Greta Lee as Maxine, Nadia’s friend, and Lizzy (Rebecca Henderson) are also expected to return for the next season. Then there is Horse, the enigmatic homeless man (Brendan Sexton III). He will definitely make a small appearance every time Nadia gets in trouble. His existence is still a mystery that may get resolved in the future seasons.

Nadia’s mother Nora (Chloë Sevigny) or Ruth (Annie Murphy in the past, Elizabeth Ashley in the present) casting depends on the time travel. Both of them are dead in the present and can only feature in the future season if Nadia time travels back.

Russian Doll Season 3 Plot

The first two seasons of Russian Doll looked like standalone stories. They become parts of a greater jigsaw, which is both its beauty and its vexation. The first season was more focused on the present timeline with Nadia and Alan’s respective deaths repeating over and over until they figure out how to break it.

In the second season, Nadia traverses between the present and past, becoming both her mother and grandmother at certain points in time.

We can expect Nadia to time travel again but in the future.

season three because season two also came to a satisfying conclusion. The future, like Nadia’s, is largely uncertain. However, we’re eager to see where it goes.

In a brief interview with Variety, Lyonne discussed a possible third season, saying, “It feels like there’s an idea cooking for season 3. And it would be really fun if it was one of those shows where, five years later, it’s like, ‘No, wait a second! I think we’ve got another idea for a few episodes.’ I would love to see that for Russian Doll. ‘Oh, wait, I think we’ve got an idea of our original movie now. It’s been 20 years later.’ I don’t think I’ll ever be done with this show. It depends a lot about appetite and reception.”

Is there a trailer for Russian Doll Season 3?

No trailer or teaser yet. Expect it to be out around a month before the actual premiere of the third season. Meanwhile, you can watch the second season trailer to get the feel of the show.
