Extraction 2: Netflix Release Date, Trailer, & Everything We Know

Extraction 2 Release Date & Time, How To Watch?

One of the most streamed Netflix movies, Extraction, is returning with a sequel in 2023.

  • Extraction premiered on Netflix on April 24, 2020.
  • Extraction 2 will release on June 16, 2023.

One of the most streamed Netflix movies, Extraction, is returning with a sequel in June 2023. Chris Hemsworth will be returning to reprise his role as Tyler Rake. Here’s everything we know so far about Extraction 2 on Netflix, including the newly released trailer.

Extraction 2 is directed by Sam Hargrave. The story is written by Joe Russo and is based on the graphic novel Ciudad by Ande Parks, Joe Russo, Anthony Russo, Fernando León González, and Eric Skillman.

Extraction was the top-streamed movie in its debut weekend, then fell to sixth place (but third among films) in its second week. Netflix estimated that the movie would be watched by 90 million households and it did receive a viewership of over 99 million households and making it Netflix’s most-watched original film at that time. In November, Variety reported the film was the fourth-most watched straight-to-streaming title of 2020 up to that point.

The movie was highly criticised and it received a score of 67% based on 214 reviews, with an average rating of 6.2/10 on Rotten Tomatoes. Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 56 out of 100, based on 35 critics, indicating “mixed or average reviews”. Rotten Tomatoes had the following review, “Spectacular stunt work and an electric performance from Chris Hemsworth can’t save Extraction from being dragged down by its aimless violence.”

Sam Hargrave has returned to direct the sequel, along with the Russo Brothers, who serve as executive producers. However, only Joe Russo is credited with writing the story.

Extraction 2: Production Timeline

The sequel of the movie was written long back in May 2020, when Joe Russo was hired to write a sequel to the film, with the intention of both Sam Hargrave and Chris Hemsworth returning.

In December 2020, the Russo Brothers stated that beyond the sequel they hope to develop a series of films set within the world of Extraction to not only explore some of the characters that were introduced in the first film but to potentially launch a cinematic universe.

In January 2021, it was rumoured that the Russo brothers were also working on an origin story for Randeep Hooda’s character Saju.

Filming for the sequel was scheduled to begin in Sydney, Australia in September 2021, but measures related to the COVID-19 pandemic moved production to Prague. The filming wrapped in the month of March 2022.

In September 2022, Netflix released a first look video for Extraction 2, which revealed that Hemsworth will return as Tyler Rake.

Per The Prague Reporter, “[Extraction 2] returned to the Czech capital earlier this month [November 2022] for reshoots on the project, which wrapped over the weekend after a short weeks-long shoot.”

Chris Hemsworth tweeted on November 12, 2022, to confirm that the reshoots had wrapped.

When will Extraction 2 be released on Netflix?

Netflix has announced Extraction 2’s release date – it will arrive on the streaming service on June 16, 2023.

Who is in the cast of Extraction 2?

As mentioned, Chris Hemsworth is back as Tyler Rake and will be joined by Golshifteh Farahani as Tyler’s partner Nik Khan and Adam Bessa as Nik’s brother Yaz. It’s unclear if Rudhraksh Jaiswal will return as Ovi, but we doubt it.

Other cast members joining the above three are Daniel Bernhardt as a character named Constantin, Olga Kurylenko as Mia and Tinatin Dalakishvili as Ketevan. It’s also rumoured that Chris Hemsworth’s stunt double, Justin Howell, has an acting role in the movie.

Meanwhile, actress Rayna Campbell who previously starred in Extraction as a radio tech of Nik’s crew has now been given the named role of Ruthie. Patrick Newall previously starred in an unnamed mercenary role in Extraction will now play the role of Seb.

What will the plot of Extraction 2?

The official plot of Extraction 2 says,

“After barely surviving the events of the first movie, Rake is back [and] tasked with another deadly mission: rescuing the battered family of a ruthless Georgian gangster from the prison where they are being held”

According to Netflix, Extraction 2 features an array of “mind-blowing” stunt work, keeping in line with the first entry. The sequel will be unrelated to the events of the first movie as the only cliffhanger for the movie was whether Tyler was alive or not. By the confirmation of a second movie, we know that he is.

“It has a different colour schematic. It’s set in a different part of the world. It has a different pace, a different tone than the first one,” said the story writer, Joe Russo.

“And that, to us, is an interesting way to approach serializing a story is that it’s more surprising and unexpected, and you’re not going to get the exact same movie that you got the last time.”
