The Sandman Season 2: The fantasy drama series will be back for the second season. Here’s everything you need to know!

  • Netflix renewed the fantasy drama series for a second season in November 2022.
  • The filming for the upcoming season starts in summer 2023.

The Sandman is a fantasy drama series based on the comic book of the same name written by Neil Gaiman and published by DC Comics. The show debuted on Netflix on August 5, 2022, with an additional episode premiering on August 19. The show was an instant hit as it ranked at number one globally on Netflix’s Top 10 titles three days after its release with 69.5 million hours viewed. With 127.5 million hours viewed for the week of August 8–14, it topped the streaming giant’s top 10 rankings beating Never Have I Ever Season 3.

The show, based on the comic books by iconic author Neil Gaiman, follows Morpheus, aka Dream, the titular Sandman (Tom Sturridge) on his mission to recapture his lost objects of power and restore order to his realm after he’s finally freed from decades of imprisonment.

Now, following a thrilling first season, fans are wondering whether the series will be back with a second season? We will answer all your questions related to The Sandman Season 2 right here including the release date, cast, spoilers and more:

Will there be a season 2 of The Sandman?

The Sandman fans have a reason to celebrate as the series is coming back for a second season. In November 2022, Netflix confirmed that the show was renewed for a second season! According to Deadline, the confirmation of the renewal came after an accidental leak by DC Comics’ official Twitter page.

The show’s executive producers Gaiman, Allan Heinberg and David S Goyer were determined to have more than one season even if Netflix cancelled the series.

In November 2019, Neil Gaiman revealed that he was already plotting a second season. “There are three of us, the showrunner Allan Heinberg, David Goyer and me, and we’ve just finished writing the first episode, and plotting and breaking down the first two seasons, so we’ll see what happens next,” Gaiman told RadioTimes.com.

Season 1 adapted only two out of 10 volumes of the source material. So, there is plenty of content available for more seasons. “We’ve got as many [seasons] as they’ll let us have,” Heinberg told NME at the show’s premiere in London.

Netflix recently surprised everyone by cancelling one of its major shows of 2022, 1899, just after one season. So, fans were fearful that they may never get a second season of The Sandman. However, Neil Gaiman previously promised that the show would have live even if Netflix had decided to pull the plug.

The Sandman Season 2 Release Date

Unfortunately, the announcement that Netflix has renewed The Sandman for a second season did not come with a release date declaration.

The first season of The Sandman took almost two years to arrive with filming getting started in October 2020 and the show finally landing on Netflix in August 2022. The first season saw several delays due to the pandemic.

Cast member Mason Alexander Park who plays Desire has revealed that filming for season 2 is set to take place during summer 2023.

He told Collider: “We’re starting shooting in the summer, and we’re gonna tackle the next huge chunk of stories in however long that might take. And I am really excited to share what that might be with everybody, eventually.”

One season of a big-budget show like The Sandman needs around 15 to 18 months to land on screens. From pre-production, visual effects, and make-up to post-production, a lot of things need to be taken care of.

Resultantly, we anticipate the show to premiere in 2024 due to the demanding post-production process, given that such shows demand more time for visual effects.

What could be the plot of The Sandman Season 2?

The next season of the show would primarily focus on the fourth and fifth volumes of the graphic novel, titled Season of Mists and A Game of You respectively.

Gaiman told to RadioTimes.com: “Our plans for the second season is the second two graphic novels, which technically, in this case, will be books four and five, with some bits of the short stories in book three scattered among some other stuff.”

Allan Heinberg, the showrunner, revealed to EW that: “The end of episode one if we move forward, is Dream saying to Matthew, ‘I’m going to Hell, and I may not come back,'” So then episode two begins with the rematch between Dream and Lucifer. It’s so juicy! I’m so looking forward to doing something entirely different with Gwendoline’s look. I don’t want to spoil the surprises for people who haven’t read Season of Mists, but that’s where Dream’s trouble really begins.”

Who will star in The Sandman Season 2?

While the official cast for the second season has yet to be announced, we may expect the following cast members from season 1 to return, among others:

  • Tom Sturridge as Morpheus/Dream/The Sandman
  • Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Death
  • Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer
  • Mason Alexander Park as Desire
  • Vivienne Acheampong as Lucienne
  • Patton Oswalt as Matthew, the Raven

Moreover, you can expect to see some characters, who only shortly appeared in the first season, in more major roles in the upcoming season, as well as a whole lot of new faces, according to The Sandman showrunner Allan Heinberg.

“I love having cast a lot of these characters already, but obviously we’ve got Norse gods to cast and Egyptian gods to cast,” he told Entertainment Weekly in August 2022. “We’ve got new demons and we’ve got some returning demons, so it’s a party. It’s a very ambitious season.”

“Part of the fun of Sandman is, if we get to season 2, you’re going to meet a whole lot more people,” Gaiman said in an interview with RadioTimes.com.

He said: “Hob Gadling is there in Season of Mists [the fourth collection in The Sandman comic book series]. Desire is waiting for us, as well. The people that you love will all come back and there are lots of people that you haven’t met yet to fall in love with.”

Is there any trailer?

Currently, there is no trailer for The Sandman Season 2 as the filming hasn’t begun yet. However, Netflix released a teaser while announcing the second season.
