The Resident is a medical drama series created by Amy Holden Jones, Hayley Schore, and Roshan Sethi. The plot revolves around the staff at Chastain Memorial Park Hospital, who work tirelessly to solve complex medical cases with the patients who come through their doors, as well as attempting to solve numerous problems outside the operating room, such as love triangles and bureaucracy.
The show premiered on January 21, 2018, and has had six successful seasons, with a large following of fans. “The Resident” season 6, which premiered on September 20, 2022, ended its relatively short run in January, but Fox took a long time to decide what would happen to the long-running series. Now that time has passed, fans are eager to learn when The Resident Season 7 will premiere.

The Resident Season 7: Is it happening?
Unfortunately, FOX has officially announced that a seventh season of The Resident is not happening. Following six seasons, Fox canceled The Resident in April 2023. The main cause of the cancellation was probably the show’s steadily declining ratings.
Season 6 saw a 12% decrease in viewers from season 5 and a 35% decrease from season 1 with an average of 6.9 million viewers per episode. As per Deadline, “In the 18-49 demographic, Season 6 episodes averaged about a 0.5 rating in L7. That’s down a significant 69% from the first season’s demo rating. Compared to the previous season, Season 6 was down 27% in the demo.”
Ownership problems also caused difficulties for the show. However, the show succeeded in providing satisfying conclusions for its main characters despite being canceled.
Jones previously admitted to TVLine that the Season 6 finale was purposefully written as a fitting series ender if the show is not renewed. That being said, fans would have witnessed the marriage of Devon and Leela, the continuation of Conrad and Billie’s romance, and how Bell and Kit manage “the mix of being a patient and a doctor.
Additionally, the main character arcs were resolved when Conrad Hawkins declared his love for Billie and was able to land the job. Meanwhile, Devon and Leela got engaged. This gave fans a sense of resolution for the characters they had become accustomed to over time.
Consequently, despite not going on to a seventh season, the show leaves a legacy of fascinating medical drama and a memorable cast and characters.
