  • Society of the Snow is an adaptation of Pablo Vierci’s book of the same name.
  • After opening in cinemas on December 15, 2023, it will stream on Netflix.

Society of the Snow is a survival thriller film directed by J. A. Bayona about the Uruguayan 1972 Andes flight disaster. The movie tells the story of the Andes plane crash from a cinematic perspective and is based on the 2008 book of the same name by Pablo Vierci.

On Oct 13, 1972, a rugby team from Montevideo, Uruguay, took Flight 571 to Santiago, Chile. However, en route across the snowy Andes, just shy of their destination, the plane tragically crashed into the remote mountains, where temperatures can reach 40 degrees below zero. The impact claimed the lives of twelve individuals while leaving several others severely injured. Despite multiple search-and-rescue missions scouring the area, the search was eventually abandoned, presuming all passengers as deceased. After nearly two and a half months, 16 survivors were rescued. But what happened during those 72 days?

This nearly impossible tale of survival will be depicted in a live-action movie. Directed by director J.A. Bayona, the film is not for the faint-hearted and includes detailed descriptions of the crash and the extreme measures the survivors took to prevent starvation, including sensitive aspects such as cannibalism.

Fans have been anticipating the movie for a while now, and as the release date approaches, their excitement for it is sky-high.

Moreover, even though many people are aware that it will be released soon, fans are still unsure of the exact date. So, when will it be released? Will there be a theatrical or digital release for the film?

When will Society of the Snow be released?

Society of the Snow debuted in cinemas on December 15, 2023, and will start streaming on Netflix on January 4, 2024. The film will represent Spain at the Oscars in 2024.

It is the first Netflix movie that the Spanish Oscar committee has chosen, and it is Bayona’s second Oscar submission after “The Orphanage” from 2007. With so many achievements already, there is no way the film will enthrall the viewers, so get ready to enjoy this masterpiece on both big and small screens!

What is the plot of Society Of The Snow?

Based on a true story that took place in 1972, Society of the Snow tells the harrowing story of a group of athletes’ struggle for survival in the aftermath of a deadly plane crash. The Uruguayan rugby team on Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which crashed in the Andes Mountains while en route to Chile, is the focus of the film.

Out of the 45 people on board, only 29 made it out alive. The survivors’ ordeal of being stranded in a dangerous and almost unreachable location added to the already distressing experience of a plane crash. Therefore, in addition to fighting against the deadly elements and extreme hunger, the film depicts the survivors’ desperate attempts to survive.

Is Society of the Snow based on a book?

Yes, it’s an adaptation of the 2008 book La Sociedad de la Nieve (Society of the Snow) by author and journalist Pablo Vierci, who was a college classmate of the plane crash survivors. Vierci also co-wrote I Had to Survive: How a Plane Crash in the Andes Inspired My Calling to Save Lives with survivor Roberto Canessa.
