Major releases of the week are Netflix’s heist thriller Kaleidoscope and Bollywood’s family drama Uunchai. Here’s a look at top movies and shows releasing on OTT in the first week of Jan 2023.

The new year starts with a bang with Netflix coming up with one of kind heist series. Based on true events, the series follows a crew of proficient thieves who work to unlock an apparently unbreakable vault to pull off an impossible heist during a hurricane. They aim to steal $7 billion worth of secret bonds owned by a criminal empire.
Gatta Kushti
Steaming: Netflix from Jan 1
Released in theatres in Dec 2022, Gatta Kushti is a sports drama movie starring Vishnu Vishal and Aishwarya Lekshmi in the lead roles. The plot revolves around Veera, a male chauvinist, who is seeking a shy, not-so-learned and subservient wife with long hair. However, he unexpectedly ends up marrying Keerthi, an intrepid wrestler who is also more educated than him and has cropped hair. What will happen when the truth is revealed is what forms the crux of the story.

The new crime documentary series is based on crimes carried out by D-Company in the 1990s. Netflix summary of the movie reads:
“In 1990s Mumbai, a crime boss and his network wield unchecked power over the city — until the rise of “encounter cops,” who brazenly kill their targets.”
Taaza Khabar
Steaming: Disney+ Hotstar from Jan 6
Comedian and influencer Bhuvan Bam stars in a crime drama series Taaza Khabar. The official synopsis reads:
“A gritty comedy-drama series set in South Mumbai, it is seen from the perspective of a shauchalaya worker, Vasant Gawde, aka Vasya, whose mundane and poverty-stricken life turns upside down when a simple dua from a good deed gives him surreal powers. Along with his tight-knit squad of friends, he uses his newfound super-power to master his own destiny until karma beckons again.”
Uunchai
Steaming: Zee5 from Jan 6
Uunchai is a family-drama movie starring Amitabh Bachchan, Anupam Kher, Boman Irani, Danny and Neena Gupta. It follows four friends, Amit, Om, Javed and Bhupen who have come a long way in life. Bhupen had a lifelong dream of going to Mount Everest with his three friends but the idea is cancelled immediately as soon as he expresses it to them during a get-together. However, Bhupen’s sudden death leads the trio to leave their comfy lives and trek to Everest Base Camp as friendship was their only motivation.
Saudi Vellakka
Steaming: Sony LIV from Jan 6
This Malayalam drama revolves around a man Abhilash Sasidharan who receives a summons warrant to appear in court for a case from his childhood. Desperate to learn the truth, he finds a small conflict snowballed into a larger one that changed the lives of everyone involved.
