  • Lockwood & Co. premiered on Netflix on January 27, 2023, with all eight episodes dropped at once.
  • As on March 12, 2023, there in no update on the renewal of the show of the second season.

Lockwood & Co. is a supernatural detective thriller series made by Joe Cornish and produced by Complete Fiction for Netflix based on Jonathan Stroud’s book series of the same name. The show premiered on 27 January 2023. Season 1 consists of eight episodes follow the plots of the first two books of the book series, The Screaming Staircase and The Whispering Skull. The show is also written by Jonathan Stroud and it has received positive reviews since its release.

The supernatural thriller series has received a lot of critical laurels. Rotten Tomatoes has generated 92% (critics) and 94% (audience) reviews and IMDb has given the show a rating of 7.6/10. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics’ consensus reads, “A paranormal procedural steered by writer-producer Joe Cornish’s usual deft hand, Lockwood & Co. is a fun-filled adventure carried off with sprightly charm.”

Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned a score of 78 out of 100 based on 6 critics, indicating “generally favourable reviews”.

Despite all the praise and laurels this amazing show is getting, will there be a second season? Here’s what we know about Lockwood & Co. Season 2.

‘Lockwood & Co.’ Season 2 Netflix Renewal Status

Renewal status as on March 12, 2023: Pending

The renewal of a show is usually announced within a month or two by Netflix. The renewal depends on several factors like completion rate, number of starters, cost and ROI.

For Lockwood & Co, we’re currently predicting that the series will likely get cancelled as its performance is poor compared to other titles in the genre. Moreover, there is a massive fall in viewership from weeks 2 to 3, which is one of the major things Netflix sees while renewing any of its shows.

If you keep up with the trends of entertainment, then you might be aware of Netflix’s inclination to cancel the shows that deal with young adults. Shows such as First Kill, Resident Evil, The Imperfects, The Midnight Club and The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself couldn’t make a cut, and all of them failed to get beyond season 1.

The viewership of Lockwood & Co. followed similar trajectories to The Imperfects and First Kill (both cancelled) but fell below Archive 81 (also cancelled). The question is if Lockwood & Co. a show belonging to the same genre will too be the victim of cancellation? Well, we will get an answer soon.

When will Lockwood & Co. Season 2 be on Netflix?

If Lockwood & Co is lucky enough to get a renewal, season two of the show is likely to arrive around Spring 2024.

Show creator, Joe Cornish told the Empire that if Netflix gives the show an all-important renewal, it is guaranteed to satisfy the viewers. He recently confirmed that season one covers the first two books in Stroud’s five-book series, he said in the interview: “So there’s definitely a couple more seasons in the books.”

“The story in the books is very well-plotted,” he added. “Jonathan Stroud solidifies the world and thinks of clever ways to explore it the more the books go on. It really goes somewhere, and it does have an end. So yeah, we’d love to do more.”

Lockwood & Co. Season 2 Cast

We can expect to see the majority of the following cast members return for season two:

  • Ruby Stokes as Lucy Carlyle
  • Cameron Chapman as Anthony Lockwood
  • Ali Hadji-Heshmati as George Karim
  • Ivanno Jeremiah as Inspector Barnes
  • Morven Christie as Penelope Fittes
  • Jemma Moore as Annabel Ward
  • Jack Bandeira as Quill Kipps
  • Hayley Konadu as Flo Bones
  • Rhianna Dorris as Kat Godwin
  • Paddy Holland as Bobby Vernon
  • Rico Vina as Ned Shaw

Ben Crompton may also return as Julius Winkman if he makes it out alive of prison after what happened in season one’s finale.

‘Lockwood & Co.’ Season 2 Plot

The official synopsis of Lockwood & Co. is:

“In London, where the most gifted teenage ghost-hunters venture nightly into perilous combat with deadly spirits, amidst the many corporate, adult-run agencies, one stands alone: independent of any commercial imperative or adult supervision – a tiny startup, run by two teenage boys and a newly arrived, supremely psychically gifted girl, a renegade trio destined to unravel a mystery that will change the course of history: Lockwood & Co.”

As mentioned, Lockwood & Co. is based on the five novels written by Jonathan Stroud. The first season is based on the first two novels in the series, The Screaming Staircase and The Whispering Skull.

So most probably the next season will be based on the third and fourth books of the series. That is, we’d likely see the fictional adaptation of The Hollow Boy and/or The Creeping Shadow, possibly leaving The Empty Grave for a future season.

In conversation with Deadline, Rachael Prior, Big Talk Head of Film and Kenton Allen, Big Talk CEO expressed the “great affinity” they share with the Lockwood books adding how it constitutes “distinct Britishness, innovative world building, vibrantly drawn characters and joyful command of the genre.” They have commented on the show as a “highly original, distinctively authored, ghost-detective show to enthral audiences of all ages.”

Additionally, Digital Spy speculates that the story arc of the second season is dependent on how Lockwood’s parents died. Season one of the supernatural thriller ended on a cliffhanger as the door to the room, which was locked throughout the season, swung open before the credits of the series started rolling.

Lockwood & Co. Season 2: Where to watch?

Just like the first season, Lockwood & Co. Season 2 will also be released on Netflix.
