The Diplomat Season 2: Everything You Need To Know!

The Diplomat Season 2 on Netflix

The Diplomat Season 2: The political drama will return for the second season after an explosive cliffhanger.

Political turmoil and humour can make for great television. Netflix has a sizable selection of political series available to stream that can evoke both optimism and scepticism. Politics is not for individuals who shy away from controversy. This long game often translates well onto the small screen.

Whether they are fiction or not, many of the Netflix-exclusive political series have relevance in today’s society. And our latest Netflix obsession is The Diplomat. The eight-part series focuses on Keri Russell’s character Kate Wyler, a recently appointed US diplomat in the UK who is tasked with resolving a number of global problems.

With all the twists and turns and drama, fans are already clamouring for a second season after the season’s shocking conclusion. Well, if you are one of them, you have come to the right place. Here’s everything you need to know about The Diplomat Season 2.

Will there be The Diplomat Season 2?

Good news, The Diplomat Season 2 is coming. Netflix generally waits a while before confirming whether another season is in the works. But considering the series’ success, the streamer officially confirmed the second season just 10 days after the first season arrived on April 20, 2023.

Well, the renewal came as no surprise because The Diplomat quickly shot up Netflix’s Top 10 list in the United States, United Kingdom and many other countries and displaced another recent hit, The Night Agent. The political drama has been a huge hit for the streamer.

Netflix announced the show’s renewal on May 1, 2023. Jinny Howe, Vice President of Drama Series, explained it was the usual next step following the show’s success. “Fans around the world are loving every minute of The Diplomat’s gripping and propulsive drama, and embracing Keri Russell’s powerful performance as Kate Wyler,” she said. “After that jaw-dropping cliffhanger, we can’t wait for them to see what the amazing visionary team of Debora Cahn, Janice Williams, and Keri Russell have in store for Season Two.”

When will The Diplomat Season 2 be on Netflix?

It is way too early to confirm such information when the renewal was announced by Netflix a few days ago. However, we can make a good guess based on the production timeline of the first season.

The Diplomat was originally announced in January 2022. Netflix released the series 15 months later. So, if everything falls in place, we could get the second season on Netflix before the end of 2024.

What will be the plot of The Diplomat Season 2?

The Diplomat follows Kate Wyler (Keri Russell), a career State Department employee who is shocked to be named the American ambassador to the United Kingdom. The action creates a massive shake-up in her personal and professional lives.

After arriving in London with husband Hal (Rufus Sewell), a former ambassador himself, she is forced into an international crisis. Kate must juggle her crumbling marriage with impending war and a forbidden attraction to her counterpart, British foreign secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi).

After that explosive cliffhanger, the show’s storyline could follow several paths. In the first season’s climax, on their way to a meeting with a British MP, Hal, Stuart and Ronnie were caught in the bombing of the MP’s car.

Now that season two has gotten the thumbs up, it appears that we will soon learn if Hal and Stuart died in the explosion or are alive and recovering in the hospital.

While the White House works to have Kate sworn in as vice president, Kate, and Austin will probably be developing a case against Trowbridge. Therefore, season 2 is expected to pick up right where the first season left off. The series will go into greater detail about the global issue.

In an interview with Netflix’s Tudum, Rufus Sewell gave his prediction for the next chapter. “All I know is that if you resolve it one way or another too quickly, we’re screwed,” he said. “I like to think there are enough problems to last us [a few seasons]. Who knows? I would like someone with a better imagination than mine to take over on that rather than follow my dumb suggestions.”
