F9 Overseas Box Office: The latest installment of the Fast & Furious franchise is having a blast at the international box office.

F9 is off to a bumper opening in the international markets. The latest installment in the Fast & Furious franchise opened in eight countries this week and is already creating havoc at the box office. The film has already grossed $130 million, with China contributing more than $115 million.

F9 has already beaten the opening weekend numbers of Godzilla vs. Kong which was the highest-grossing opening weekend during the pandemic. Godzilla vs. Kong grossed $123 million worldwide in its opening weekend. It was released in 38 countries as opposed to F9’s eight markets. This is a good sign for the film ahead of its home release on June 25, 2021. According to Variety, F9 is expected to gross $160 million over the three-day weekend.

One of the main reasons for the bumper opening of F9 in China is the popularity of the Fast and Furious franchise in the country. The action-thriller franchise is a big moneymaker for Universal Pictures in China. The Fate of the Furious and Furious 7 are the second and third highest-grossing foreign films in China, respectively, behind only Avengers: Endgame.

So far the biggest winner at the pandemic box office has been Godzilla vs. Kong with overseas gross accounts to $332 million. It remains to be seen if F9 challenges these numbers. It all depends on how well it holds after the opening weekend.

Directed by Justin Lin, F9 is a sequel to the 2017 blockbuster The Fate of the Furious.  Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, John Cena, Jordana Brewster, Nathalie Emmanuel, Sung Kang starrer has received mixed reviews from the critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, 33% of six critics awarded ‘F9’ a positive review, with an average rating of 5/10.
