Bollywood Box Office 2014 Report Card Q1 : Hits and Misses of first quarter of Bollywood 2014

It’s the end of the first quarter of 2014 and we must say a very sluggish period for Bollywood Box Office. With just 2 Super hits out of 25 in the first quarter  its been a retarding period for Bollywood. If 2013 saw new benchmarks with record-breaking success of Dhoom 3, Chennai Express and Krrish 3, this year hasn’t been that great so far. Though most of  the movies bumped at Box Office but still the total turnover for the first quarter is almost the same as 2013. The first quarter of 2013 was 530 crores while is slightly high than 2014 with 515 crores.

Lets see the Bollywood Box Office 2014 Report Card Q1 in more detail.

The year started with Arshad Warsi’s Mr. Joe B Carvalho and Sholay 3D released on 3 Jan 2014. Mr. Joe B Carvalho was a disaster with lifetime collection of 4 crores. The movie bumped because of lack of promotion and awful treatment. Movie of the century Sholay was translated to 3D but the wasn’t even able to recover its budget and ends up at mere 11 crore lifetime collections.

Next week saw clash of Dedh Ishqiya and Yaariyan. Although, Dedh Ishqiya was praised by critics for cinematic excellence but  failed to connect with the audience and ends up with collections of 27 crores. Yaariyan, on the other hand emerged out as first surprise hit of 2014. Superb music, youth oriented content worked in its favor and it settles for excellent figures of 40 crores.

Its more of a content than Big stars in first quarter of 2014. Jai Ho and Gunday were the only two releases made with budget of more than 50 crores. There were huge expectations from Salman Khan’s Jai Ho but Salman fails to recreate magic at Box Office. Although, the movie earned 111 crore(only 100 crore in 2014) but it can’t be said creditable considering Salman Khan’s recent form at Box Office. Gunday made with budget of around 50 crores worked at Box Office and able to collect around 70 crores with hit status on its name.

It was probably the first time that women oriented movies were the highlight at Box Office. Be it Dedh Ishqiya, Gulaab Gang, Queen, Highway or Hansee to Phasee. Queen proved to be a movie of a lifetime for Kangana Ranaut. It has already collected 50+ crores and Box Office and is still going strong. Undoubtedly, the most deserving super hit of 2014. Parineeti Chopra and Siddharth Malhotra’s sizzling chemistry liked by one and the movie settled with lifetime collections of 35.5 crores probably because its more of a movie for multiplex audience.

Highway got mixed reviews from Audiences and well as critics. The movie ends up with average collections of 27 crores. Farhan Akhtar and Vidya Balan’s sweet romantic Shaadi ke Side Effects got sweet reviews and was able to collect around 35 crores at Box Office.

Must respite for Bollywood comes with Ragini MMS 2 released on 21 March 2014.The movie unexpectedly worked at Box Office and collected around 25 crores in it first weekend itself. It is still going strong at Box Office with collections till date around 45 crores. Ragini MMS 2 is the second super hit of 2014 after Queen.
