South Korean survival drama series ‘Squid Game’ has been a massive hit worldwide. Will the series return for its second season on Netflix?
South Korean survival drama series Squid Game has become a global phenomenon. Recently, the series has officially reached 111 million fans, making it the service’s biggest title launch ever. The Korean survival drama has been a massive hit, not only in the United States but in several other countries as well. It has reached the no. 1 position on the streaming service in 94 countries. After a super successful first season, Squid Game fans are wondering, if the series would return for the second season.
In an interview with CNN, Squid Game director Hwang Dong-hyuk shared some insights on the future plan with the series. He talked in detail about the show’s future and what it took to make Squid Game the global hit.
Talking about his plans for the second season, Hwang Dong-hyuk said, “I want to unfold the frontman’s (played by Lee Byung Hun) past and Hwang Jun-ho (played by Wi Ha Joon) story and the man who carries around ddakji in his briefcase (played by Gong Yoo’s) story. These weren’t necessarily explained in the first season, so I’d like to explain those parts in season 2.”
In an interview, Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed that he was laser-focused on completing Season 1 during production and hadn’t given any thought to a sequel prior to the show’s release.
However, he admitted that after the super success of the first season and demand for the sequel, it’s possible that more “Squid Game” episodes could be on the way.
The director said, “I’m thinking about Season 2, but at the time, I was so tired after finishing Season 1, I couldn’t really think of Season 2. But now that it’s become such a big hit, people would hate me if I don’t make a Season 2, so I feel a lot of pressure and think I’d have to. The big success of Season 1 is a big reward to me, but at the same time it’s given me a lot of pressure.”
Though nothing is confirmed at the moment, we are assured that Netflix would definitely renew the show seeing its global success. After all, Squid Game is now the most-watched series of all time on Netflix.
