Based on a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Makoto Yukimura, Vinland Saga is a Vikings-theme anime. Season 1 comprises 24 episodes aired in Japan from July 7, 2019, to Dec 29, 2019. In the past two years, this exciting anime series has gained a huge fan following across the world. Now, the fans are eagerly waiting for the next installment. Will there be Vinland Saga Season 2? When is Vinland Saga Season 2 release date?
After a lot of speculations, on the second anniversary of ‘Vinland Saga’ i.e. July 7, 2021, manga artist Makoto Yukimura confirmed the production of the second season. He tweeted:
The second season of the anime Vinland Saga is in production. I am very happy to be able to convey the news that the fans expected. I am also looking forward to the second season. Let's wait for the follow-up news together.

Twin Engine announced the new season on July 7, 2021, and also released a teaser trailer that shows off a few brief snippets from the next season.

Almost a year later, anime production company Twin Engine finally unveiled a new promo for the next season. The company also announced the premiere date. Vinland Saga Season 2 will premiere in Jan 2023. Watch the new promo here:
Vinland Saga Season 2 Plot
The story is set in the 11th century AD, with northern Europe at war. An Icelandic boy Thorfinn, joins the company of the Viking and military commander Askeladd after the latter kills his father. Thorfinn continues to challenge Askeladd in contests and loses every time. He seeks revenge but, ended up developing an uneasy, intense father/son relationship with Askeladd. Overall, Vinland Saga is a story of heartbreak, revenge, feeling, peace and relationship.
The first trailer of the second season doesn’t hint much about what to expect. However, it suggests that Thorfinn may be looking for more than revenge to give meaning to his life.
In the new trailer, we see flashbacks to Thorfinn’s stint as a mercenary under Askeladd’s command. We also see scenes of Leif Erikson and Thorfinn’s great uncle Thorkell interacting with new characters, as well as shots of King Canute standing atop a pile of treasure and brushing his hand across the scar he received during the climax of the first season.
Vinland Saga Characters
In the first season of Vinland Saga, we saw some incredible characters. Each one of them had its own unique style of fighting. Here’s a look at the characters:
- Thorfinn: He is the main character of Vinland Saga. Thorfinn vowed to avenge Thors’ death and he began to live his life as a Viking.
- Askeladd: The leader of a group of Vikings, Askeladd is a great swordsman and strategist
- Thors: He was the father of Thorfinn. He was the strongest character in the first season.
- Canute: He is the son of King Sweyn. He is one of the weakest (in terms of power) characters.
- Thorkell: He is a giant man who only lives for the sake of fighting.
- Willibald: The Preist against any form of violence.
- Ragnar: He was the guardian of Prince Canute.
- Jabbathe: A weak character who was under the false impression that he was a great military commander.
- Floki: Floki is a commander of the Jomsviking.
- Leif Ericson: Leif was a very close friend of Thors. After his death, he took it upon himself to bring back Thorfinn.
Where To Read The Vinland Saga Manga?
Vinland Saga manga is written and illustrated by Makoto Yukimura. It was first serialized in Kodansha’s shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Magazine from April 13 to October 19, 2005. It was then transferred to Kodansha’s seinen manga magazine Monthly Afternoon and is still ongoing, publishing new chapters monthly.
So far, 25 manga volumes have been published in Japan. The latest volume was published on July 21, 2021. Vinland Saga Season 1 adapted the first 8 volumes of the manga series. So, there is enough source material available to produce at least two more seasons of anime.
Where To Watch The Vinland Saga Anime?
Well, there are not many options to watch this splendid action anime. In fact, it is only available on Amazon Prime Video. All 24 episodes are available in Japanese with English subtitles. The series will once again stream on Prime Video in the United States, like the first season.
In Japan, all seasons of Vinland Saga Season 1 are available on Netflix, Prime Video, and U-Next. In the UK, it is available on Prime Video and Crunchyroll.
Coming to home video, the action anime is available on a Japanese Blu-Ray. So, Amazon Prime remains one of the best options to watch this impeccable action anime.

The first season was animated by Wit Studio, the studio behind the first three seasons of Attack on Titan. MAPPA is producing the second season of this action anime.

Shūhei Yabuta, who directed the first season, announced earlier this week in a tweet that the same staff of animators who worked on the first season would be returning to work on the second season.
