11 Upcoming Bollywood Movies That Are Remakes Of South Indian Movies

South Indian movies are performing well in Hindi markets. Especially recent ones like Pushpa, RRR, and KGF Chapter 2 were blockbusters in North India. Besides South Indian movies dubbed in Hindi, cine-goers in North India also love South remakes. The success of movies like Ghajini, and Rowdy Rathode is a testimony. Bollywood often tends to adapt the storyline of these movies and make Hindi remakes out of them. So here, we have compiled a list of upcoming Bollywood movies that are remakes of South Indian movies.

1) Anniyan (2005)

Bollywood star Ranveer Singh and director S. Shankar are teaming up for the Hindi-language remake of the 2005 Tamil blockbuster Anniyan. The Tamil psychological action thriller movie starred Vikram and Sadha in lead roles. It won eight Filmfare awards, a National award, and six State awards as well!

2) The Great Indian Kitchen (2021)

The Great Indian Kitchen is a 2021 Malayalam drama movie written and directed by Joe Baby. It narrates the story of a newlywed woman (Nimisha Sajayan) who struggles to be the malleable wife that her husband (Suraj Venjaramood) and his family expect her to be. Harman Baweja will produce the Hindi remake which will be helmed by Arati Kadav. Dangal star Sanya Malhotra plays the lead role in the movie titled Mrs. It also stars Nishant Dahiya and Kanwaljit Singh.

3) Master (2021)

Thalapthay Vijay and Vijay Sethupati starrer Master was one of the biggest Tamil hits of 2021. Just a day after it was released, Shine India and Murad Khetani acquired the rights to remake it in Hindi. As per the sources, Salman Khan is in talks to play a lead role in the movie.

4) Soorarai Pottru (2020)

Inspired by the real-life of GR Gopinath, the founder of Simplify Deccan, Soorarai Pottru stars Suriya, Aparna Balamurali, and Paresh Rawal in main roles. It was selected as one among ten Indian films to be screened under the Best Foreign Film category at the 78th Golden Globe Awards.

The director of the original movie Sudha Kongara is helming the Hindi remake of Soorarai Pottru tentatively titled Udaan. It stars Akshay Kumar and Radhika Madan, with Paresh Rawal reprising his role. Suriya is also doing a cameo role. It will be released on Feb 16, 2024.

5) U-Turn (2018) – Released (Available on Zee5)

U-Turn is a Tamil and Telugu film starring Samantha, Aadhi Pinisetty, Bhumika Chawla, and Rahul Ravindran. It is a remake of a 2016 Kannada movie of the same name. In 2021, Ekta Kapoor announced the Hindi remake of this thrilling movie. Alaya F plays the lead role in the movie. The Hindi remake debuted on Zee5 on 28 April 2023.

6) Naandhi (2021) 

Allari Naresh and Varalaxmi Sarathkumar starrer Naandhi is a Telugu courtroom drama directed by Vijay Kanakamedala. Dil Raju has bought the rights to produce its Hindi remake. Ajay Devgn will be appearing in the lead role.

7) Joseph (2018)

The Hindi remake of the superhit Malayalam crime thriller “Joseph,” is in production. Starring Sunny Deol and Bengali actress Tanushree Chaktavarthy, the project is helmed by M Padmakumar who also helmed the original. The film was remade in Tamil as  Visithiran (2022), in Telugu as Sekhar (2022), and in Kannada as Ravi Bopanna (2022).

8) Comali (2019) 

Comali is a Tamil comedy-drama that starred stars Jayam Ravi, Kajal Aggarwal, Yogi Babu, Samyuktha Hegde, and KS Ravikumar. Comali follows Ravi, a coma patient who has missed 16 years of his life and struggles to adapt to the new improved world. Boney Kapoor has announced a Hindi remake with Arjun Kapoor in the lead role.

9) Aruvi (2017)

The Tamil political drama Aruvi made a significant impact upon its 2017 release. Now, a Bollywood adaptation is in the works. The plot revolves around a spirited young woman’s journey as she seeks to uncover the darker aspects of contemporary society, all while navigating through an existential quest for purpose and meaning.

10) Ayyappanum Koshiyum (2020)

The Hindi version of the Malayalam superhit movie Ayyappanum Koshiyum is in the works. Mission Mangal director Jagan Shakti is helming the project starring John Abraham and Arjun Kapoor.

11) Nayattu (2021)

The political thriller in Malayalam that came out in 2021 got a lot of praise. Allu Arjun, a big star, has bought the rights to make a Telugu version, and there might also be a Tamil one. Meanwhile, John Abraham is planning a big Bollywood remake with a different title. It’s a story where the police and politics get tangled up after a crime happens.
