It’s raining hits this summer. One after the other, we are witnessing massive numbers at the box office. After Jurassic World: Dominion, Minions: The Rise of Gru, and Top Gun: Maverick, Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder is the new splash at the box office. One of the most-anticipated summer releases of the year, ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ records a big box office opening.

The fourth movie in the Thor franchise and the 29th movie in the MCU marks Taika Waititi’s return to the Thor franchise after the grand success of Thor: Ragnarok (2017). As per early estimates, Thor: Love and Thunder records the highest opening for the Thor franchise with $143 million.

The Thor franchise has grown with each successive movie. In 2011, Thor opened to an impressive $65 million, and two years later Thor: The Dark World opened with $85 million. Thor: Ragnarok directed by Taika Waititi opened at $122.7 million. It is widely credited as the movie that refreshed the bland franchise.

The opening weekend projections for Thor: Love and Thunder were as high as $150 to $170 million. However, the numbers were hit due to mixed reviews and word of mouth. Nevertheless, it still is the biggest opening of the Thor franchise and one of the biggest opening weekends of 2022.

Third highest opening of 2022

‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ is the third-highest opening weekend of 2022 in the domestic market, behind Jurassic World: Dominion ($145 million) and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ($187.4 million). Its opening weekend is higher than other blockbusters of the year like The Batman ($134 million) and Top Gun: Maverick ($126 million).

In the international market, Thor: Love and Thunder brought in $159 million, carrying its global opening weekend to $302 million. With this, Thor 4 is the second-highest global opener of 2022, behind Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ($450 million).
