The Serpent is a crime drama based on the crimes of serial killer Charles Sobhraj, who murdered young tourists between 1975–1976.

In July 2019, the BBC announced that it had ordered the eight-part drama series to Mammoth Screen that shows crimes committed by the infamous serial killer Charles Sobhraj.

Charles Sobhraj is a French serial killer, thief and fraudster of Vietnamese and Indian origin. He is additionally known as the Serpent and Bikini Killer. In the 1970s, Sobraj committed at least a dozen murders. In 1976, Sabhraj is supposed to have killed 10 travellers on the hippie trail through Nepal, Thailand and India. Today, Charles Sobhraj, 77, is serving a life sentence in Kathmandu prison, Nepal.

The director of ‘The Serpent’ Tom Shankland said in an interview, “Bringing the lost era of the hippie trail back to life has been a dream of mine, ever since I first went travelling in Asia and heard the name ‘Charles Sobhraj’.”

In the United Kingdom, The Serpent premiered on BBC One on New Year’s Day in 2021 and all eight episodes were released on BBC iPlayer on the same day. The viewers outside the UK are waiting for the release of the series on Netflix. We have a fair amount of details about The Serpent season 1 including its global release date.

The Serpent star cast and other details

French actor Tahar Rahim is in the lead role of Charles Shobraj. Jenna Coleman is one of the prominent stars of the series. Jenna played Marie-Andrée Leclerc who served as Sobhraj’s partner in crime and associate. The Serpent also stars Ellie Bamber, Billy Howle, Tim McInnerny and William Brand.

The mini-series is written by Richard Warlow and Toby Finlay with Tom Shankland and Hans Herbots helmed the project.

The Serpent season 1 Netflix release date

While we were expecting The Serpent to premiere on Netflix outside the UK in either February 2021 or March 2021. But it was on Mar 4, 2021, when Netflix announced that season 1 will arrive on April 2nd, 2021.

Netflix UK will get the series a year after it has concluded airing. That will probably be in early 2022. Until then, the series will be available on BBC iPlayer in the UK.
