Executive producer Nigel Marchant said: “We are really proud of The Last Kingdom, which continues to entertain audiences all over the world. We had such a tremendous response to the last season, so are thrilled to be bringing it back for season five on Netflix. With such a loyal fanbase, we’re excited to give viewers a chance to follow Uhtred on the next stage of his quest.”

Netflix renewed the series for season five in July 2020. If we look at the release schedule, there is a gap of 18-months between the seasons. With this pattern, season five should have been released in the last quarter of 2021. However, due to coronavirus, this time the production took more than usual time.

The good news is that the release date for the last season is out. The Last Kingdom Season 5 premieres on Netflix worldwide on March 9, 2022. All 10 episodes will be dropped at once.

What will be the plot of season five?

The Last Kingdom Season 5 will be based on the 9th and 10th series of the novel ‘The Saxon Stories’ – ‘The Warriors of the Storm’ and ‘The Flame Bearer’. The new episodes are expected to follow Uhtred as he feels that his destiny is intertwined with the future of England.

According to the synopsis, Uhtred will have to ‘face down his greatest enemy and suffer his greatest loss’ to achieve his destiny. So, it can be assumed that the fifth season will be filled with lots of painful and saddening moments.

“We don’t like to deviate from the books, we like to keep the characters and the essence there, but sometimes it just doesn’t work. But that’s not to say that we couldn’t see them in the future,” Nigel Marchant said.
