Shadow and Bone Season 2: Release Date & Everything We Know!

Shadow and Bone Season 2: Netflix’s American fantasy series created by Eric Heisserer is coming back with another season in March 2023.

  • The first season of Shadow and Bone dropped on Netflix on April 23, 2021.
  • The second season of the fantasy series is coming to Netflix in 2023.

Shadow and Bone is a fantasy series created by Eric Heisserer. It debuted on Netflix on April 23, 2021. The series is based on two series of books in the Grishaverse by Leigh Bardugo, the Shadow and Bone trilogy and the Six of Crows duology. It adapts the story of young Alina Starkov, an orphan and cartographer for the First Army of the Ravka nation, as she learns she is a Grisha, a being with unique abilities who has been long-awaited to help the universe with one of its most pressing problems.

After the success of the first season, Netflix renewed the series for a second season in June 2021. The renewal came alongside a video with the cast talking about the renewal.

On the renewal, Shawn Levy (executive producer of the show) said:

“My 21 Laps colleagues and I are thrilled that audiences around the world can continue to explore the Grishaverse and revel in the epic, unique storytelling of Shadow and Bone.

The fun of our jobs as producers is the collaboration with creative partners who inspire us.

Leigh Bardugo and Eric Heisserer are two such partners; together they have created a world and pantheon of characters that fans all over the globe have embraced. We can’t wait to take viewers on the wild ride that comes next…

Fans are finding it a little challenging to handle their curiosity as the release date draws near.

So, what’s the current status of Shadow and Bone Season 2? When will it premiere? What does it have in store? Who is the cast? Well, in order to find out, keep reading.

Shadow and Bone Season 2 Release Date

It would be surprising if a show or movie that earns a lot of positive reviews weren’t renewed for a second season or a sequel. However, Netflix did not give its fans much time to ponder, as Shadow and Bone’s second season was ordered just two months after season one’s debut.

Filming for the second season started in Jan 2022. It was originally scheduled to wrap on May 18, 2022, but got extended till June 6, 2022. Netflix confirmed in a short clip that filming had wrapped. Several cast members also shared their views on the upcoming season and also confirmed that filming had concluded.

Jessie Mei Li (who plays Alina Starkov) said:

We’ve officially wrapped season 2 of Shadow and Boen and we cannot wait to show you what we’ve been up to.

Lewis Tan (who plays Tolya Yul-Bataar in Season 2) added:

We can’t give too much away at this time but we wanted to answer a few questions to keep you guys guessing on what’s to come.

Netflix released a sneak peek video at the Tudum event, revealing a broad release window for the upcoming season.

The streaming giant announced the release date in Feb along with the trailer. Shadow and Bone Season 2 releases on March 16, 2023.

Shadow and Bone Season 2 Plot

Even though Netflix hasn’t released an official synopsis of the second season of Shadow and Bone, we do have some fairly good theories regarding its subject matter. In the previous season, we witnessed The Darkling enlarge the Shadow Fold, Alina and Mal escape Kirigan’s immortal grasps for the time being, and Alina’s collarbone absorbs some mystical stag antlers.

Kaz, Ineji, and Jesper also visited Ketterdam again in season 1. As Nina is determined to get Matthias out of jail, she pursues them. Even though we don’t yet have any concrete information on Shadow and Bone Season 2, reading the novels, Siege and Storm and Six of Crows can help us start to piece together a fairly clear picture of what it would entail.

The first season adapts Shadow and Bone (2013) and adds an original storyline featuring the Crows, a criminal gang for which the eponymous duology is named. The second season will adapt Siege and Storm (2013), and another original storyline featuring the Crows.
