2017 wasn’t a great year for Bollywood as around 95% of the total releases bombed at the box office. The grand success of Tiger Zinda Hai in the last week provided the much needed respite. Tiger Zinda Hai was the last release of 2017. There was no big release in the first week of 2018. In the second week, three movies hit the big screens and all of them had a terrible terrible opening weekend. Let’s have a detailed look at the first weekend collection of Mukkabaaz, 1921 and Kaalakandi.

Mukkabaaz first weekend collection

Despite receiving decent reviews from critics, Anurag Kashyap’s Mukkabaaz had a low opening weekend the box office. Well, this was always expected as Anurag Kashyap films is not everyone’s cup of tea. The movie earned 82 lakhs on the first day. On its second day, the movie almost doubles its numbers and earned 1.51 crores. On Sunday, the movie saw minimal growth. As per early estimates, the third day collection of Mukkabaaz will be around 1.8 crores. The first weekend collection of the movie stands at 4.13 crores.

Kaalakandi first weekend collection

Saif Ali Khan’s dark comic thriller Kaalakandi looks like a European style movie not meant for conventional Bollywood audience. The fate of the movie was decided even before its release. Released on around 1000 screens, Kaalakandi earned 1.25 crores on its opening day. The opening was poor considering the release size and Saif Ali Khan’s stardom. On Its second day, the movie saw dip in numbers and earned only 1.2 crores.

As per the reports coming, Kaalakandi third day collection will be around 1.2 crores. The first weekend collection of Kaalakandi stands at 3.4 crores. It is Saif Ali Khan’s sixth disaster in a row. The actor needs to reconsider his choice of movies.

1921 first weekend box office collection

1921 turns out the best release of the week in terms of box office numbers. On the first day, the movie earned 1.46 crores. The numbers could have been higher if there wasn’t some release problems in the first half of the day. On its second day, the movie saw small growth and earned 2.09 crores. On Sunday, 1921 earned around 2.4 crores to take ts first weekend total to 5.95 crores.

Overall, it turned out a disastrous weekend for Bollywood. 2017 was a bad year for Bollywood and a disastrous start to this year is not a good sign for the distributors and exhibitors.

Note: The third day numbers are the early estimates.
