As expected, Rani Mukherji starrer Mardaani is off to a slow start at the box office. Released on 1600 screens in India, the film collected around Rs 3.75 crore on its first day. Mardaani 2 is a sequel to 2014-hit Mardaani. The film got off to a poor start in the morning shows as it recorded around 10% occupancy. However, it saw good growth in the latter half to end the first day on a positive note.

The film is released on 1600 screens in India and 505 screens overseas. Besides, the film is being screened with English subtitles in the southern states of India. Mardaani 2 has received U/A certification from the Censor Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

The film has received positive reviews from the critics and is expected to witness good growth over the weekend. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh called Mardaani 2 ‘intense’, ‘hard-hitting’ and relevant’. He has also appreciated Rani Mukerji and Vishal Jethwa’s performance in the film.

The previous film of the franchise Mardaani, released in 2014, collected  Rs 3.46 crore on its opening day. It earned around Rs 36 crore in its lifetime. It would be interesting to see if Mardaani 2 can breach this figure.

The budget of Mardaani 2 is Rs 30 crore. It needs to collect Rs 40 crore to be called a box office hit. The film has just one week to earn as much as it can as from next week there is Salman Khan‘s storm at the box office. Dabangg 3 releasing on 20 Dec is expected to be the widest Bollywood release of all time.
