Loki: Everything you need to know about MCU's new web series
Loki web series - MCU

Tom Hiddleston is back as Loki for a new MCU web series. Here’s is everything you need to know.

Loki is an American web TV series created by Michael Waldron, officially for the MCU. As depicted in Marvel comics and movies, Loki is Thor’s brother and the God of Mischief. Playing a side character for so many years, eventually, Tom Hiddleston is getting his TV series as Loki in a titular role. Formerly, he has portrayed this character in all Thor movies (Thor, Thor: The Dark World, and Thor: Ragnarok) and three of four Avengers movies (The Avengers, Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame).

Loki is a part of Phase 4 of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe). It is MCU’s third TV series to release this year after ‘Wandavision’ and ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.’ The series stars the trickster villain, Loki in particular, and three other lead characters that are members of the TVA (Time Variance Authority). So here’s all the stuff you should know before watching the series.

How is Loki back if he died in Avengers: Infinity War?

Yes, sadly, Loki is no longer alive. Though he has acted several times to be dead, this time Thanos himself choked the life out of him. So how can he appear in the series? Here’s the answer. The one that we will be seeing in the series and have seen in the trailer is from a different timeline. To be more precise, it is an alternate version of Loki, a Loki from the time of ‘The Avengers‘, 2012.

We saw a scene in Avengers: Endgame when Tony from the future was about to steal the tesseract. Unfortunately, Hulk intruded in his manner, and the tesseract slid towards Loki’s feet. Next, we saw him vanishing with that blue cube. In the trailer too, we saw after disappearing from that scene, Loki appears to be in some sort of a desert, where some people arrive and wonder who he is.

What did the trailer reveal?

The official trailer of Loki was released in April 2021. Since then, the fans have been discussing several theories about Loki. We could have listed all the theories here but it’ll be good if we wait, barely a few days to go. The first trailer revealed that Loki has put the timeline in chaos and he is taken to the Time Variance Authority (TVA).

There, two choices are offered to him, either he can agree on wiping out his own existence or he can help TVA in fixing the timeline. Obviously, he chose the second one. Besides, it was his dialogues that amazed every Marvel fan out there. “Brother..when I’m down, You better be ready”, said Loki and after jumping off the plane, a cosmic flow grabbed him. This hinted a bit of Thor’s existence in the series.

What will be the plot/storyline?

As we already know now, after stealing the Tesseract in 2012, Loki vanished and landed somewhere in a desert. Later, he is arrested for breaking reality as he escaped custody with the tesseract during the events of Avengers: Endgame. He is brought to the secretive alliance, TVA (Time Variance Authority) that exists out of time and monitors the timeline and reality.

There he chooses to fix the timeline by altering human history and stop a greater threat. Next, we have we’ll be witnessing to what extend will Loki go to fix the timeline. Still, it’s not clear from any of the videos, what Loki is actually intended to do while fixing time.

What will be the cast of Loki?

The new Marvel series is led by Hiddleston as Loki. There are three pivotal characters as well. These are:

  • Owen Wilson as Mobius M. Mobius, An agent of the Time Variance Authority.
  • Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Ravonna Lexus Renslayer, A former Hunter of the TVA and now a respected judge.
  • Wunmi Mosaku as Hunter B-15, A high-ranking guard of the TVA.

Moreover, there are several other characters designated to appear in the series. These are Sophia Di Martino, Richard E. Grant, Sasha Lane, Erika Coleman, and Eugene Cordero. However, their roles are not confirmed yet.

After stealing the Tesseract during the events of Avengers: Endgame, an alternate version of Loki is brought to the mysterious Time Variance Authority (TVA), a bureaucratic organization that exists outside of time and space and monitors the timeline. They give Loki a choice: face being erased from existence due to being a “time variant”, or help fix the timeline and stop a greater threat. Loki ends up trapped in his own crime thriller, traveling through time and altering human history.

When will it be released?

Back in 2018, Marvel Studios agreed to develop multiple limited web television series for Disney. These series were to be centered around supporting characters who haven’t got their own films. Loki was confirmed in November 2018, and filming commenced in January 2020. However, the Covid-19 pandemic interrupted in March, and the filming got postponed to September. By December 2020, the filming completed, and Loki was scheduled to release in the spring (May) of 2021.

Though, the release too was shifted a month. It was all set to release on June 11 (Friday), until a piece of news confirmed that it’ll be streaming on Disney+ from June 9 (Wednesday).

Moreover, it also confirmed that all the successive episodes of the series will be released once a week on Wednesday. So, ‘Wednesday’s are the new Fridays’, as said by Tom Hiddleston himself.
