Bollywood Movies 2020 Delayed Due To COVID-19: Sooryavanshi, 83 & More

COVID-19 has affected the entertainment industry big time. Big budget movies like Sooryavanshi, 83 and Radhe have been delayed due to the lockdown.

Film industries across the globe have been badly hit by the pandemic and Bollywood is no different. Production of movies have come to an abrupt halt and there is still no clarity as to when will the shootings or other production activities resume. In addition to all this, it has massively disrupted the “release calendar” of the industry.

Thus, the film administrative chambers will have a tough time allotting fresh release dates. Several films which were ready for release are playing the “waiting game” with their hope and patience diminishing slowly and steadily day-by-day. To make things worse/better (depends on individual perspective and the stakeholder concerned), the OTT platforms coming to the rescue of small and medium budget films has divided the entire film-community and has added an entirely different dimension to the proceedings.

We will have a look at some highly anticipated Bollywood movies which are at different stages of production (some even ready for a theatrical release) are getting delayed by the pandemic.

Brahmastra

Brahmastra was one of the films for which the audiences were waiting with bated breaths for a long time. The reasons for this are plenty. Firstly, it brings back the highly successful duo of Ayan Mukherjee and Ranbir Kapoor. Secondly, the massive budget and the star-studded cast of the film which includes Ranbir Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, Alia Bhatt, Mouni Roy, and Nagarjuna. Thirdly, it is the passion project of Ayan Mukherjee, one of the most promising directors of our time.

Thus, the expectations have skyrocketed and hopefully, it is a memorable film like the director’s previous outings. The film is scheduled for 4th December 2020 release, which now seems highly doubtful. Some reports suggest that the released date has already been pushed to Summer 2021.

Laal Singh Chaddha

The word that instantly comes to your mind when you think of Aamir Khan is perfection. It is his penchant for details and a sharp eye for credible scripts that have cemented his place in the industry. From 2001, Aamir had a streak of critically acclaimed and commercially successful films until Thugs of Hindostan happened. It was a critical and commercial failure.

This is the reason that all eyes are on this film, as the trade pundits are wanting to see how Aamir bounces back. Laal Singh Chaddha is the official remake of the 1994 classic ” Forrest Gump.” The audiences are waiting as to how Aamir will adapt the film according to Indian sensibilities. The film is scheduled to release on Christmas 2020, which now seems highly doubtful.

Gangubai Kathiawadi

Well, the combination of Alia Bhatt, one of the most promising actresses of our industry and Sanjay Leela Bhansali, one of the most influential directors of our times, is surely mouth-watering. To top it all, Alia Bhatt playing the role of a gangster seemed like a dream come true. The earlier released posters just elevated the hype to another level altogether. Until Corona came and played spoilsport. The film was to release on 11th September 2020, which now seems highly unlikely.

Prithviraj

Akshay Kumar has had a sublime run at the box-office for the past few years. All of his movies have become commercial blockbusters and have received unanimous approval from the audiences. Prithviraj was in the news for all the right reasons, Akshay’s association with Yash Raj Films after a gap of 11 years, the debut of Miss World, Manushi Chillar with this film and Dr. Chandraprakash Dwivedi, who is known for his television series “Chanakya” which is still fresh in the minds of the viewers being at the helm of things.

The first schedule was nearly over until they were forced to shut shop due to the virus. The film was to release on Diwali 2020, which now seems highly doubtful.

Jersey

Shahid Kapoor had a dream run of sorts with Kabir Singh. The film broke all box-office records and was one of the most talked-about films of last year. Shahid was looking forward to replicating the same success with another Telugu remake. This time bringing the Nani starrer Jersey, which was both critically acclaimed and commercially successful, to the Hindi speaking audience. Shahid had gone under intense preparations for playing the role of a cricketer. More than 70% of the movie was completed until the virus had made it impossible for them to shoot. The film was to release on 28th August 2020, which now seems highly doubtful.

Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai

Salman Khan’s Radhe was supposed to release on Eid. However, due to the Corona outbreak, the film failed to make it to the theatres. Reports suggest that around 90% of the film is complete. Salman Khan is in no hurry as is waiting for the things to settle down. Radhe is expected to release of Diwali if everything falls in place.

Sooryavanshi, 83, Coolie No.1, Chhalaang were all ready for a theatrical release. Now all these movies would look for good release date once the theatres reopen. Medium budget films have opted for direct OTT release. In this series, Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana’s Gulabo Sitabo will be the first movie to directly release on Amazon Prime Video.
