Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ensures that the summer movie season gets off to a great start.
Marvel’s superhero extravaganza Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness is off to a great start at the box office. It grossed an estimated $185 million in its first weekend in the United States and Canada, the Walt Disney Co. said Sunday.
This is the biggest opening of the year, ahead of The Batman which grossed $134 million in its opening weekend. It is also the second biggest opening of the pandemic, behind Spider-Man: Far From Home’s $260.1 million. Doctor Strange 2’s opening is more than double of its prequel Doctor Strange which debuted in 2016 and earned $85 in its opening weekend.
Internationally, the Marvel biggie recorded even better numbers. As per estimates, Doctor Strange 2 grossed $265 million from the international box office since its debut on Wednesday. In total, Doctor Strange 2 grossed $450 million worldwide in the first weekend. It is the 10th highest opening of all time.
Doctor Strange 2 has been one of the most anticipated movies of 2022 and Spider-Man: No Way Home is somehow the reason for it. In fact, the Spider-Man movie is responsible for Doctor Strange 2’s great debut at the box office. Benedict Cumberbatch aka Doctor Strange appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home which has become the third highest-grossing movie of all time.
Doctor Strange 2 picks up several months after the events of “No Way Home,” and brings in Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff, who became very popular after the Disney+ series WandaVision that aired last year.
In Doctor Strange 2, the MCU unlocks the Multiverse and pushes its boundaries like never before. Doctor Strange opens a doorway to the multiverse. With the help of Wanda Maximoff, Wong, and America Chavez, he traverses the multiverse on a mind-bending and mystical journey.
