In just two months, the anime film has soared to 30 billion yen at the Japanese box office, breaking countless records on its way.

Japanese anime film ‘Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train’ is unstoppable at the Japanese box office. After 59 days of its release in Japan, Mugen Train has sold 22,539,385 tickets to gross ¥30.3 billion (USD$291 million). It is only the second Japanese film to cross ¥30.3 billion other than Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away (2001). Mugen Train will soon become the highest-grossing film in Japan beating Spirited Away which stands at ¥30.8 billion.

What’s remarkable is the pace at which Mugen Train crossed the ¥30 billion milestone. It crossed the ¥30 billion milestones in 59 days, four times faster than Spirited Away which took 253 days.

The global total of Mugen Train stands at around $310 million, with a small amount coming from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Vietnam. Directed by Haruo Sotozaki and produced by the Tokyo-based Ufotable, the film will release in North America and Canada early next year.

Demon Slayer Movie box office journey

Released on October 16, 2020, in Japan, the film opened to tremendous response. Upon release, the film broke the first-day record with ¥1.2 billion ($11.3 million). On its opening weekend, it grossed ¥4.6 billion ($44 million) in Japan. It is the best three-day opening weekend ever at the Japanese box office. In 10 days, it became the fastest film in the history of the Japanese box office to cross ¥10 billion and $100 million. It went on to gross ¥20 billion (US$197.9 million) within 24 days, becoming the fastest film to cross ¥20 billion in Japan.

These are incredible numbers as several safety measures are in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic, such as spaced seating, limiting admissions, or a ban on food and drinks in sessions with full capacity. The record-breaking numbers have been attributed to the Demon Slayer franchise’s popularity in Japan.
