Akshay Kumar ‘Akki’ broke the myth that to get a break in films either you should belong to Bollywood family or you must have a godfather. From a chef in Bangkok, to one of the most eminent  actors in Bollywood, Akshay Kumar has come a long way.

Akshay Kumar(Rajiv  Bhatia) was born in Amritsar, Punjab. His father served in the military. His mother’s name is Aruna Bhatia and sister’s is Alka Bhatia. He was raised in Delhi’s Chandni Chowk before moving to Mumbai. He did his education from Don Bosco School and Guru Nanak Khalsa College in Mumbai.

Akshay obtained black belt in Taekwondo and studied Martial arts in Bangkok, Thailand, where he worked as a chef. He commenced the teaching of Martial arts, upon his return to Mumbai, where one of his students, an ambitious photographer, recommended him into modelling and it turned to be a gold mine for Akshay , therefore, he chose a modeling career path which was eventually and obviously converted into films.

Akki made his very first appearance as the lead actor opposite Rakhee and Shantipriya in Saugandh (1991). Although his first few films were unsuccessful at Box office, they helped Akshay get noted for his dancing capabilities and daring stunts. His first breakthrough film was Abbas-Mustan directed Khiladi. In 1994 he starred in Yash Chopra produced Yeh Dillagi opposite Kajol, for which he was nominated for the best actor at the Filmfare Awards and Star Screen Award. Akshay  proved to have success with the ‘Khiladi’ series which includes : Khiladi, Mein Khiladi Tu Anari, Sabse Bada Khiladi & Khiladiyon Ka khiladi.

And then after, there is no looking back for Akshay ‘The Khiladi’ as he has appeared in over 125 films with the performances full of maturity and poise including mixed versatile roles starting from action (Khiladi series) to drama (Waqt, Patiala House), romance(Yeh Dillagi, Dhadkan, Andaaz, Namastey London) and comedy(Hera Pheri, Mujse Shaadi Karogi, Bhagam Bhag, Bhool Bhulaiyaa,  Singh is Kinng). And the list is getting bigger and brighter including Housefull, Rowdy Rathore, Oh My God, Khiladi 786, Once Upon a Time in Mumbai Dobara etc.

Akshay married Twinkle Khanna, the daughter of super star Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia in 2001. The couple has a boy named Aarav and a daughter Nitara.

In 2004, he was honoured with the Rajiv Gandhi Award for his amazing achievement in Bollywood. In 2008, he was named the ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ by People magazine. He was one of the 15 international celebrities invited for the Olympics torch-bearer rally to Canada.

In 2009, he was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India.
