1. Golden Anniversary Celebrations
The release date of ‘Star Trek Beyond’ was willfully scheduled to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Gene Roddenberry’s original ‘Star Trek’ TV series which debuted in 1966. On 23 December 2014, Paramount Pictures announced the movie to be released on 8 July 2016. On 17 September 2015, Paramount Pictures postponed the release date to 22 July 2016 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Gene Roddenberry’s original ‘Star Trek’ TV series. 2. New Director
After JJ Abrams, the director of ‘Star Trek’ and ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ left the franchise to work on ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’, scriptwriter Roberto Orci was roped in to direct the movie. However, in 2015, Orci left the project to make way for Justin Lin. Justin is best known for directing part 3 to 6 of ‘Fast and Furious’ franchise. Justin took the directing job by beating big names like Edgar Wright, Rupert Wyatt, Morten Tyldum, Daniel Espinosa and Duncan Jones. 3. New Scriptwriters on board
Roberto Orci, writer of ‘Star Trek’ and ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ began work on a script for ‘Star Trek Beyond’ movie in 2013 with Patrick McKay and John D. However, in 2015, Orci left the project making way for Simon Pegg and Doug Jung. Simon Pegg is known for writing comedy films such as ‘Shaun of the Dead’, ‘Paul’ and ‘Hot Fuzz’. ‘Star Trek Beyond’ is his first drama film.

4. Tragedy and Devotion
On 19 June 2016, Anton Yelchin, who plays Pavel Chekov in the franchise, passed away at the age of 27. ‘Star Trek Beyond’ is Yelchin’s last ‘Star Trek’ film. The actor had completed work on projects like ‘Rememory’, ‘We Don’t Belong Here’, ‘Porto’ and ‘Thoroughbred’. This is the second time when Star Trek and Star Wars franchise movies are releasing in the same year. ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’, first movie in Star Wars anthology series in slated for release on 16 Dec 2016. The first time this happened in 2002, with the releases of ‘Star Trek: Nemesis’ and ‘Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones’.
